In the early to mid '70s, the minimum wage was around $1.65/hr ...... for people who didn't get tips. I don't remember what my cash wages were as a waitress at that time, but I know it was nowhere near the $1.65 that busboys made. I'll bet those waitresses who didn't share the tips were making less then a dollar an hour .... and putting up with surly customers and picky eaters and poor tippers on vacation.

So many people judge others by what they 'do'. I'm at 'at home' mom, and you would not believe the people who say things like "So you don't work, eh? Must be nice."
It's a job I freely chose and I wouldn't trade time with my kids for a CEO's salary, but it sure would be nice to get a bit more respect.

Honestly Dewlanna - I don't remember what wages (per hr) the waitresses got - they worked hard - on the weekends all the rooms were open and the place was hopping. But they money they got was pretty healthy - I do remember $30-$50 figures per day not being unusual. Us busboys were a bit green about it.

My hat's off to you. As I was saying, everybody has different priorities. As for respect, I'm sure you have your family's!

hmm.... i have held minimum wage jobs. in particular, try working 8+ hours a day in front of the pizza oven. when the order isnt out on time, its your fault and you are costing the wait staff their tip. when the order is wrong, its your fault never the wait staff which doesnt write down orders when taking them. if everything thing goes right, no one says anything to you.

and while i think college is a good idea and usually leads to a worthwhile career (there are some majors/people that probably shouldnt be taken too seriously) there are other ways to make money w/o a degree. if i didnt have my degree i would probably be an electrician. good tradesmen are a dying breed.

Millions of Americans everyday work a dead end/low paying job just to make ends meet. In 1988 I worked at Walmart for $3.55 an hour and I got $hitted on everyday at work.

But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Tipping is done differently in various countries. France it is something not required but for good service as a repeat customer, you will continue to get that service. Same with the amount of the tip. All the travel books now say the tip for average service at a U.S. restaurant is now 20%. Pizza guys do get tipped, so do the bell hop ($1/bag), coat check, valet parking, barber, etc. Around here it's a buck a pizza, minimum. It's just a social norm.

The pizza owner paid us minimum wage plus $1 per delivery and minimum wage. The $1 barely paid for gas and that was years ago. Maintenence and vehicle costs were on me. Sometimes it amazed me that a waitress could deliver food a few feet and get 15% - 20% tips and I could drive 30 miles in my car and get stiffed but hey thats how life goes.

Just for the record, waitress are NOT paid the same minimum wage that most workers get. In Michigan the minimum wage is $5.15/hr. For tipped employees the minimum wage is set at $2.65/hr.
THAT is why waitresses get tips. You, the costumer, are directly paying a portion of your server’s salary rather than the employer charging you more for your food and then paying the waitress out of the extra profits.

Way to break the mood... In all honesty, no where did Bugshu say that waitresses get minimum wage. You sir, obviously didn't pay attention to the point of this post. Read it again and you'll see that he is not complaining but merely thanking blue collar job holders for the service that goes unrewarded.

Bugshu - I agree with you! I attend LSU and even though I am on a tight budget, I know the people who are serving me are most likely students so I tip 20% or more.

I wasn't responding to the point of the post, I was simply letting Bugshu know why ....waitress could deliver food a few feet and get 15% - 20% tips ....
It's because that 15 to 20% is a part of their wage. It's not something extra that waitresses get that pizza delivery people don't get.

And by the way, sir, you haven't paid much attention to my other posts in this thread or you would't have said You sir.

Sorry for skewing the vector slightly.

That "job" is the most "underpaid" and underappreciated one I can think of. My wife is fortunate enough to stay at home and I think its done wonders for our son. I wouldn't trade my job for her's on a bet. My days off doing just a fraction of what she does on a daily basis flat wear me out. I tell folks I have to come back to work just to get a break, bad guys/gals are easier to deal with

. FWIW, I have TONS of respect for you all that make the sacrifice

Real Mom's that stay at home to raise the kids never get enough praise in my book. It's ten times harder than delivering any pizza and a hundred times more important. One of the main problems in our society is the breakdown of the family. Ever since females became "liberated" in the 60's the cost of Mom leaving the home has been underestimated. You don't hear about it much for fear of being called sexist, yet studies have shown that Moms that stay at home raise more sucessful and emotionally stable children.
I commend all Mom's that do this and wish more could.

Dewlanna - I saw your first post and posted..... didn't see the other post.... I feel stupid...

Well, while you do bring a good point... why can't you just say, hey, i agree.

My deepest apologies mam. I like how you would give anything to be with your kids. I've met too many people at LSU who's parents were never home or were really abusive. Kudos to you!
