TGMO 0w20 is Mobil Super 0w20

Was getting some drain plug gaskets at Toyota dealership today for the Pontiac Vibe and it's rear diff, transfer case, and transmission. Was doing drain&fills on all of it. And while I was there - I had a little chat with the parts guy. According to him - TGMO 0w20 is basically Mobil Super Synthetic 0w20. Not Mobil 1 0w20, like I heard before. How accurate is his statement? Anyone has any proof of either? I tried searching, but all search results lead to TGMO vs Mobil 1, not Mobil Super Synthetic... Maybe I just suck at searching. So what do y'all think? I was gonna use it in my dad's Tacoma. He doesn't want SRT 0w40 from my stash in his engine.

Is ur vibe the 1.8? Hows the SRT running in it? Im not sure whether to run it straight or mix it in my rolla.

So far so good with SRT. It get's dark pretty fast, but not an issue for me. My Vibe's engine is sludged up by previous owner, so I just use the SRT with short 3k OCIs to clean it up. Tried Valvoline 5-40 MST, and it felt like there was 5 300-pound guys in the car with a 1500lb trailer hooked up non-stop. And fuel economy was horrible, so I drained it and will use it in the mower. I love how smooth the engine is with SRT. Both the Pontiac and Lexus feel super smooth.

Honestly - just run it straight, you won't regret it. But keep an eye on consumption. My vibe took the SRT without an issue, But lexus had initial oil consumption that went away pretty quick. 1.5 quarts in less than 1k miles. But no consumption after that. Close to 5k now on oil.

BTW - even the bottles between Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0w20 and Toyota 0w20 are exactly the same. Just color and stickers are different. But at the same time - Mercedes genuine motor oil comes in the same bottle as well, 0w30/0w40.

Thank you!I found couple VOAs as well as UOA for Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5w20. Not much info here for the 0w20 unfortunately. But the info you have provided gives me confidence that TGMO is closer to Mobil 1 0w20, but can't tell for sure...

They're definitely different oils at the end of the day... however I'd bet they both begin their lives from Mobil's Visom base stocks. Both of them are entirely Group III.

The TGMO VOA shows high Calcium and low Magnesium, which makes it quite unlike the 20 and 30 grade Mobil 1's. Looks closer to MSS to me. But, with no Boron and higher Calcium, it's not quite like MSS either. It's almost like a mix of the best of MSS and Pennzoil Ultra. Whatever it is, it looks pretty good. It definitely is not like Mobil 1 0w-20.

Toyota 0w20 doesn't have Boron in it. And Mobil Super 0w20 is also a high calcium - no magnesium. They're probably more similar than they are different... with the main exception that Toyota 0w20 has the higher VI and around 100ppm of Moly.

straight would be just fine, I'm running it in all my rebuilt 1zz-fes, when looking at cam shaft wear on these engines(if any, most do from the oil burning era), you can't "change" the bearing on them. There is no way to compensate for cam shaft wear, other then trying to run a slightly thicker oil, I prefer any 0w30 to 0w40 Euro oils, they seem to run just fine on them.

The crankshaft on the order hand has bearings that take a beating if there was any lack of maintenance, therefore, when all bearing are replaced on the crankshaft, it runs good again.

Now if your original motor has never had any issue and doesn't burn any oil, use the any 30 weight recommended by the manufacturer, as it will run just fine, and running any 40 weight, wouldn't really harm anything(I think)

I have seen 10 bad crankshaft on these engines from running it OUT of oil, the engines that ran "low" on oil have abused bearings but almost immaculate crankshafts.

That's because Mobil makes all of them. That of course doesn't mean they are the same oil.

Another mark on the list: Mobil Super Synthetic runs about $5-$6 a quart bottle. TGMO is $5.99 at my local dealership, and Mobil 1 is $8-9 a quart. Go figure.
