The Fast Lane finally did the first oil change on their 2020 "GODZILLA Super Tremor". Did I mention then went 9500 miles on that 1st change? They had Black Stone do an oil analysis on the oil and overall I agree it looked good, but I did notice it had sheered out of grade.

Considering their usage plans for this truck, the fact that it is lifted with oversized tires running a tune, I think 10k oil changes is way to much and that they need to be following the severe service schedule and changing the oil every 5-7.5k miles (preferably 5k).

Thoughts?

They didn't provide a link, but you can see it in the video. Take a look around time code 4:58.

I attached a couple of screenshots of the video.

Did it come with a 5w30?
Well, change that oil sooner, or go to a w40 for 9500mi drop.

They tend to not keep their project trucks.

However, if you plan to keep this as a forever truck, I'm all in on the 5k OCI.

Very true, I was thinking more in general. That and the fact that Black Stone said to do 10k again. I mean it isn't horribly out of grade but I think they should've suggested backing it off a bit.

Typical MC 5W-30 Analysis (including the ending viscosity). If that's post SP GF6A formulation doesn't look much changed.

It's nice to see an engine without 4' of timing chains and with conventional port injection for a change.

The shearing down grade is typical when shed metals are high. That's probably why Blackstone gave the "try again" recommendation.
I would just use 5w40 Valvoline full-synth and do another UOA at 9500mi, then adjust from there as needed.

I picked one up Saturday- 7.3L
Very smooth and quiet engine.
10 spd is very smooth as well especially in Eco mode

I was somewhat shocked that they didn't do an earlier oil change, and while I agree the UOA wasn't terrible, I just don't feel like a 10k change is appropriate for that usage case.

To me, towing with a lifted, tuned truck seems like a recipe for disaster. But then again they don't keep their projects as mentioned above.

I guess when I maintain a vehicle I try to consider the future owner when I do maintenance.

Seems many folks say get a UOA and then don't trust what the UOA reveals (i.e. take it to 10,000 miles)?

I personally am not one to trust a UOA. To me it is a snapshot of the health of the engine, not the shape of the oil.

The actual purpose of UOA's is to determine the condition of the lubricant for continued use. They also provide some insight into equipment health by way of tracking which can expose anomalies that can lead to the discovery of mechanical issues such as a part failing or a leak, such as coolant or dirt ingress.

One of Ford's marketing pushes with the 7.3 is it will allow 10,000 mi OCI as compared to 7,000 mi OCI of the previous V-10 in the Medium Duty Chassis Cabs. I suspect those trucks are going to be worked pretty hard on average.

Ford Severe Duty schedule says "Follow Oil Life Monitor".

That may be true...but if you read what I said, I said "TO ME" the UOA is a snapshot of the engine's health. Either way, I shared my opinion...some agree with me...some don't. That is the beauty of things, we can agree to disagree. Have a good day.

Interesting...I'l just leave this right here from the owner's manual...

It seems to me that what TFL is doing to their truck does not meet normal use, but rather severe in which case the 5000-7500 I mentioned at the beginning of this thread would be accurate.
