According to the FCC and the 4 major wireless carriers TXT to 911 is going to become a reality in 2014. Has anybody here used it yet or know of anyone how has?

Quote:
The top four wireless carriers in the U.S. have agreed to speed up their efforts to support text-to-911 capabilities, making it available by May 15, 2014.Text-to-911 service is currently available on a limited basis in a few areas.

Seriously this is useful a number of ways. Bad reception, hiking, choking, kidnapped in a car trunk, hostage situation, language barriers, deaf people...

A few years ago one of my co workers went to a Taco Bell drive through. Upon receiving the wrong order he pointed it out to the cashier and she proceeded to throw his order at him and cuss him out. He pulled over into the next parking lot and called 911. He came out of it with a citation for misuse of the 911 system and parking in handicap. He didnt talk to me for a long while after I laughed at him about it.

Yep. Where I live texts always work, albeit after a few minutes. Cell reception, not so reliable. And in a different thread here, I mentioned that the telecom appears to switching me over to fiber, and it was pointed out that the router that they use might only offer a few hours of battery.

Seems a natural move. I wonder how badly it will get abused? Probably no worse than the current system.

And if your kid gets kidnapped but you have pictures on your phone you can get that to the cops for an amber alert so much faster. (Though I imagine now a detective could call you back with his cell and you could SMS message him directly.)
