Texas

My buddy, a CT transplant, tried to get me to come down there to work at his power plant around eight years ago; however, the horrible school systems made that an immediate "no, thanks", considering I was planning on having kids. You guys were ranked #50 back then and, based on a quick Google search, you're still right around there.

I come from a state with crappy school systems and had to make that up as an ungrad. I'll be darned if I don't make education a priority for my kids.

RE: crawfish: we order 10-30# each year, over-nighted, and do our own boil. Awesome time. I'm sure it's a HECKUVA lot cheaper to get down there; same goes for shrimp!

I'm glad the OP is looking out for his kids, too, especially at their age.
We make that list … a large number of kids show up and can’t speak English … the parents never will …
On the other end are the entitled brats … once glance at our HS parking lot spells land of lost priorities ..

OP, are you looking at any other states? You're already moving more than a weekend trip away, so why not consider all of your options?

Granted, I've thought about TX myself, but figure it would be too much culture shock. I mean, I don't even own a truck or a gun!
I went through the New York school system and I was always pretty smart.

I'm reasonably smart but had to work really hard to get to where I am now. Luck played no small part. I had some incredible people vouch for me and help me get an essentially free ride. Well, you tax-payers were on the hook for that, so I guess I should be thanking all of you, too! :geek:

I grew up in the mid-Atlantic. My first year of HS was one of the first years they started bussing in city kids. It was also one of the first years we had a resource officer, as well. I loved my school and some of my teachers, but a few of them couldn't take the ghetto kids who cursed them out and were overall just disrespectful and ended up quitting; one guy, Mr. Durb (for short) ended up essentially losing his mind.

Luckily, the school my kids will go to is ranked highly in education and sports, with tons of activities to choose from.

Yes, we are open to other States as well. Texas just happened to be where some new faculty jobs showed up. Never been to Texas myself (yet), so just taking it one day at a time. My wife wants to continue teaching and has a tenured position here that pays well with great health benefits (which helps as I'm self employed). I probably would be just fine in Texas as I have plenty of firearms (personal hobby) and know Texas has a good racing muscle car community. I will definitely keep this thread updated. Our schools are good here, just have major disagreement with current policies.

I can tell you how our high school teachers get around one policy … they park on the street 🤓

There are other reasons for which I’ve never considered moving to CA. Without getting political, which policies have irked you the most? School boards? Personal? Feel free to not answer if it’s purely political. I get it. I live in CT...

I can say both political and personal mixed in with a lot of hypocrisy from the powers that be. I can tell you I am far from alone here in California. Governor is a misguided fellow. Probably best to leave it at that.

My wife travels for her job and is a senior bussiness analyst. She works for a firm that gets hired to improve a businesses productivity and other aspects. No offense to Texans, she says they are the hardest people to deal with. You can't change their mind, they don't want to hear your opinion and they only want to deal with like minded people.
My opinion as well.

I love Texas. They gave me Johnny Winter, ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughn (Johnny Winter called him the best kept secret in TX).
Only been there a couple of times, but I had a great time. Austin (6th Street baby!) and Arlington. Lady Bird put in all those pretty flowers!
I love CA too. Been so good to me.

Flowers popped this year … made lots of 4 hour round trips selling our condo in College Station - and they made the drive pleasant 🌻

I am a foreign born Texan, have been in Dallas since early 80's after college OK State. All the areas that you have mentioned are great exception being Farmersville as I don't know much about it. I live in Far North Dallas close to North Dallas Taxway, George Bush Taxway and not too far from Sam Rayburn Taxway and I-35.
School are good in all the areas of Plano, Frisco, McKinney. My nieces went there and when to college at UT Dallas and got great jobs. I myself retired a very large defense contractor. One key to living in Dallas is to be close to at least one highway. July, August and September are hot and dry, rest of the year is great maybe one ice storm in January or February. Not a fan of downtown especially after dark. 8.25 sales tax on non food and prescription, high property taxes cover no state income tax, overall very clean city exception being inner cities. Hoping I covered most of the basics.

^ Sounds a lot better than Alabama. High taxes, swamp *** most of the year, weird weather, dangerous all the time everywhere.
