Decide of Heck with it - Lets Clean up Back of Shop Area & Solve our storage Issue & Fix Window all with One Move

3 Sides POP-OUT - Covid - Not Going anywhere . . Great Time to do this - Solve 4 Items , We have Lean-Too that Needs to come Down ..
Re-Use Lumber AS Cost went Crazy after First Buy of Most of Materials - Scored Windows at Left Over Place $40 each ..
Cost $295 - Today $498 . .

Away We went & Decided We'd do some Testing along way - with - Insulation & Air Spacing & Vapor Controls & Better Soffits
Hardware & Fasteners - along with Coatings . .

I'll try Keep it to Point , but I could Write Book on this . . & have at Least 975 Pic's , but will try to Keep it under 30 ..

Looking @ Old Broken Window on Hot Summer Day ~ I was Like Wow that is " Disgustingly Hot "

DECIDED to Go with More IR Reflective Breather & Lighter Exterior Color - with - Additive for a POP . .

Two Simple Tweaks for Coolness - but I wasn't Finished there . . We Added Stone Skirting . .

Oh Wait - still - Not Enough

Decided I Try something I Had Never Done in My Life : COOL WALL or Vented Wall system . .

I Checked some Designs for References :

Started Small Plan :

Room for Skirting & Water Control & vapor Controls - got - Sample from Cor-A-Vent

Had Special Z Kick Out Made with Safety Edge Added - along with - Taller & Wider Dimensions . .

Even on Inside as there is 1.25" Air Gap built into Wall between 2" x 6" R15 ROCK-WOOL which also Breathes very Well !

SPACE is Not Heated or Cooled by 99% of Time . .

300 Plus Holes drilled all way through Main Siding Supports at Top ~ Drilled ~ straight into Soffit Flow Zone
Acts as Additional During Heat & as Flow Control During Cold or Coolness . . NOT Pulling Much on Cold Rain Day ..

Dog Rated Screen for Bug Control - even thou - COR-A-Vent has this Built in . .
Also at Bottom :

First a Layer for Taper too siding Kick :

Even Back Cut Side - Furring strips to Enhance Balance in Flow

More Venting then Main Shop ever Had : Pic is Before Added Furring strips & Holes etc. Screen . . other Soffits are 11"

This Normal Way but - Re-Call - TESTING 1-2-3

We did 290-300 Holes in Siding Support 5/8" Bored Through - into - Soffit Flow Zone ..

BALLOON CONSTRUCTION UP ALL WALLS INTO LADDER SOFFITS ~ FORMING TIE IN . .

Re-Used Lumber amounts 36% in this Build :

Extra Bracing : TIE - DOWNS ETC. due to Odd Width of Building Adjusted Wall cavities to Hit all Seams on Joints for Sealing
Outside Joints & all Nails Punches were Sealed with Tar - Black Jack as that special Tape is like
$36 Roll & would have Burn @ Least 2 Rolls .. 3 If we did Roof sheeting - which is 100% Ice & Frost covered . .

Throwing Down on Braces - & - Hardware
During World Wide Shut Down this Hardware was Cheap as Nothing was Happening . .

CUTTING LARGE HOLES ~ ALLOWING OLD ROOF ATTIC TO FLOW with Newer Pop Out
Breathing - so - Old Deck has approx 7 ~ 8" -9" Dia. Holes in it - Not seen in this Photo , but Where is Important . .

HARDWARE HEADS & MATERIALS : Seems some of Chinese stuff has made it way into Building Industry some
Good Some ~ Bad . .

I Found that several Varieties Heads will Snap Right Off - even on Soft wood with Longer Screws , so Guys Watch Out for SS
Sure Stainless is Nice to have in Humid Area's but 304 is Not Type - 316SS is much Better & Those with Air Guns may have Run into this Already ..

I Found that SPAX HARDWARE is Really High Quality & Heat Treated Properly see Pic.

Can Be Removed Later to Redo an Area of Make a Change some of Items on Right - NOT so Much
Even Thou I did in 2 Area's as I didn't Like Brace .. Have to have SLOW Start to back Puppies Out
Many of My Braces were " Hardwood White Oak "

Even with small Pilot Hole on Big Long Ones - didn't Go with 480 in. lbs Tq. in Low Range - Fully Charged Battery
4.0 W/Hr. Battery . .

Yep, good job.
On that reflective insulation, it's the air gap that does the trick, and venting that of course.
I wish they made garage doors like that! I insulated mine inside with foil faced stuff, but wasn't smart enough to leave the air gap. Of course in his case, no easy way to vent the gap anyway.

IR Foil in this case is 5% Rated - picked up 500ft roll - $126
Building isn't Heated or A/C - I do have 30 Btu Gas Unit - that Only on when in shop in middle of Winter for few Hour Tops
Rest of shop is Block .

Air Gap Wall system - made Huge Difference - It's 100% Completely Different now Warmer in Winter & Cooler in Hot Summer
By Large Amount - Before Building would stabilize Temp for 14-20 hrs - Now it Stabilizes over 3 Days .. & Inner Block Wall
Acts as Mass Storage . .9ft x 20ft Swings are Super Slow & Never Feel - IR Heat Pounding Wall - Simply is Gone !

I Mean Like when it 68F 1 day then 10F next Morning & Snowing with 30 Mph Winds

My Garage Doors Sucks - I used Blue Hard Foam Friendly Glue & Cut Precision Fit Pieces - Placed those Inside
In Metal Framing Tight to Door - Strengthen Door - Bumped those from R4-R6 to R11 switch seems Small Bump
Made Nice Difference .. those 2 Doors & Storm Windows are on Main Home .. Shop has Old Style Wood Doors
10ft High Type with Single Glass so maybe R2 Glass & R3 for Doors - Not Good .. Leak around Edges ..

Haven't even consider anything for those as 59 Other Projects in Last 10 yrs -Way More Important . .

R16 Garage Doors Rated for 120 Mph - sure would be Nice . . ( Dade County Florida Doors ) LOL Haa
Not around Here . . Might be able to get R10 Doors that are Stronger . .
