Is there a way to test the MAF sensor signal going to the computer while driving? That's the only way I'm gonna catch the MAF sensor acting up. I'm assuming some kind of an oscilloscope with a data record function is what I'd need. You guys know of a test instrument that can do that?

If you have a o-scope, you wouldn't even need to drive it. Just have it hooked up and stomp the pedal. When the engine takes a big gulp of air, the MAF should react instantly and shoot up then fall off a cliff as soon as the throttle plate shuts. A bad MAF will be lazy and wont have the instant reaction to these events.

Do you think it's just reading wrong or also going electrically berzerk? OBD logging's the best, quickest, dirtiest way.

My SIL used to have an '05 Impala with a bunch of miles on it. It started acting funny, running rough once in a while, and shifting weirdly. I tuned it up (needed plugs bad), serviced the trans (the fluid was awful), and basically caught it up on maintenance. While it ran much better it still wasn't "right". Some quick internet research pointed to a possible MAF sensor issue. I called my buddy, a former GM mechanic, and asked his advice.
He said to warm the car up and while it is idling smack the top of the MAF sensor with the handle end of a screwdriver. If it stumbles and almost dies or does die, replace the MAF sensor. It did so I replaced it and the car ran fantastic after that.
