Test drove a $2500 Grand Marquis today

You can do way better than that car. Having owned a GM in the past, they are great cars. But that one is going to need a lot of work. I'd pass unless you're a mechanic
and/or willing to put money into it.

If I could get it for $2k including tax it might be a fun project. The thing that’s holding me back more than anything else is the airbag light. That’s likely not something a hobbyist tinkerer like me needs to be messing with.

Eh, sometimes it's worth paying to have someone else do the work. That said, I'm not sure it's that hard to work with--I've never worked with them, but they have to have some level of "design for the worst handling" built into them.

That said: this rust concerns me:

and the Carfax shows it was in PA for 9 years. Not saying it's a rotbox but to me, it's a good sized flag.

There’s another, larger rust spot on the passenger side in front of the rear wheel. It was pouring rain when I drove it so I didn’t crawl under it. For $2k I would assume it looks pretty bad. The good news is that I still have plenty of Rustoleum. Unfortunately none of it is “silver burch” tint.

I had to remove the airbag when I installed the aftermarket cruise control in my 2007 Corolla. I did it on an August day with super humidity (to reduce the chance of static) and wearing a hard hat and my very best pair of safety glasses. My guess is they messed up the crash sensor when they cracked the front bumper, but I have no real data to support that.

On my prior car, the one with failed clear coat, I made zero attempt to color match when dabbing over rock chips. Brown Rustoleum on gold (sage? whatever, about that color)? sure, didn't bother me. On this particular car, where more of the paint is in better shape, I might attempt to color match. Maybe...

I just bought a gallon of tractor paint in John Deere green. Might be pretty popular out here in farm country.

That's pretty high for $2,500. I'm wondering what the dealer gave the previous owner for trade. Anyways, I would offer maybe $1,500 and go from there if there's no rusted out brake lines, etc. Check that exhaust, too. Like someone mentioned, it could be a stolen cat.

Stolen or bad catalytic converters are a major cause of making old cars not feasible for fixing and going to the junk yard. The vehicle in question is very close to going to the junkyard. While reliability few miles-it has other things wrong with it. The ABS light is a big one. If it wasn't the previous owner would still be driving it.

This thing was traded in for a reason. I'm guessing the dealer gave him $1,000.00.

I've always been a fan of the Panther platform (see my sig 😇) but that price is too high for its condition. The dealer likely took it off the previous owner's hands for little or nothing. Offer them $1500 as is.

No mention of the ABS light. Air bag light yes.

FWIW - that car shows better than 95% of others for lack of interior wear.

The airbag light could be as simple as a faulty sensor. FORScan will read SRS module codes.

Looks like the header panel has been replaced so perhaps the front sensor right behind the grille could have been damaged.
