Greetings!
My wife and I test drove two 2016 Honda HR-V's at two different dealerships. Both were AWD w/CVT. The 1st one was an LX and the 2nd one was an EX(sunroof etc). We spend over an hour with each LX/EX versions(no EX-L available yet that we've seen in our area). Driving was in excess of 30 minutes with each.

My wife really likes the idea of the HR-V's size and style. She's always wanted MFG's to produce small(carlike) AWD CUV's and now, they're here. With the new 2016 Mazda CX-3 not coming to dealers til September. But, the HR-V is the one that she like thus far.

Yes, we've looked at other small AWD's on the market such as the Fiat 500L and Cooper S & Countryman, Juke, etc. but, neither of us are really excited about these other offerings(for one reason or another)! So, on to the HR-V!

Well, the interior is nicely sized with good room front & rear. And with Honda Magic Rear Seats, the HR-V offers plenty of interior space. We both like all of the seating position(s) and overall comfort and IP. We did not play with the infotainment system as they are, what they are. Meaning a high learning curve!!!

We are just interested(right now) in the driving dynamics! Meaning...comfort, steering, ride/handling & interior quiet,(or lack of) and all around outward visibility. YES, the Honda Lane Watch & backup camera are nice feature worth having(Std).

Well, I am just a bit disappointed in this offering from HONDA! For many reasons in fact. But, let me talk about the good qualities FIRST!

As mentioned, we like the interior space. Outward visibility is very good in front and to the sides, including the rear door glass. But, the rearward visibility is limited as expected but, is better with the rear seats folded or with the rear headrests lowered.

EX gets std heated front cloth seats!

Instrument Panel(IP) is well laid out as in most Honda's but, the infotainment screen ease of use will need to be played with to get it's full understanding.

We both like the style of the exterior(subjective) as it looks most conventional in our opinions, unlike many other offerings from the other MFG's. Great looking standard 17" aluminum wheels across the trim lines.

Dislikes:
Standard interior fabric is kind'a CHEAP! It looks like the cheap car cover that I bought at Big Lot's for $20. The other interior surfaces are OK!

The EX-L should address this issue but, we don't typically want leather.

Ride/Handling is OK but, not great! Over broken pavement for a new car, I expected better. The cabin is a bit noisy and not as quiet as I expected considering some of the Video Reviews that I watched from Motorweek, Alex on Auto etc.

Engine is completely GUTLESS(or so it feels) considering it's the Civic's 1.8L and not the Fit's 1.5L. The CVT is fine but the engine drones a bit too much. Even with the standard 215-55-17 Michelin MXV4, the ride just isn't very quiet. I have these same tires & size on my 2015 Altima and love them.

CVT's are what CVT's are and I can get used to them! I am liking them in the vehicles that I own and test drive. Especially for their added fuel economy but, I don't notice the added acceleration that I read about. CVT do make the engine(IMHO) feel a bit lethargic but, acceleration test numbers show that I am wr-wr-wrong!

I see cost cutting in too many places for my liking considering these HR-V's in the trimline and configuration that we'd consider, are around $24-$25K. And probably NO DEALING/Negotiations. So far, we've seen some Upmarket pricing from one dealer.

This particular HR-V seem to cause much compelling arguments in my mind. Compelling considering the Cost/Value. Compelling for the cost of a reasonably equipped HR-V, I rather put the money into a lower line(LX/EX trim)CR-V. Or another brand midsize CUV.

Compelling for the ~$25K...I would consider a dollar comparison(apples to oranges) for another $25 vehicle.

Compelling argument for a CPO vehicle of another type!

Compelling argument for another $23K-$26K Honda(Civic EX/Accord LX or Sport/Honda CR-V EX @ $26K+)... I have driven these 3 other Honda's mentioned and I think that they're better for the money!

I just don't think that the HR-V(IMHO) is worth it's cost nor, do I even think it a good vehicle...ESPECIALLY for the money! For LE$$ money, sure! But, not for $24-$25K w/AWD & CVT...the way we would buy a vehicle.

Well, that's it for now and I am sure that I left out some things in the Likes/Dislikes. If anyone has any Q's, please ask!

I sorta laughed at Honda's pricing on this Mexican-Built jacked up FIT.

I was out the door 21K for the Japanese built Rogue with the Altima 2.5L. You can get a base Forester or Rav for under 23.

What you say pretty much describes the Honda lineup these days
Quality is down and so is reliability a bit.

My babied 13 Accord Sport with 19K miles on it has all the alloys
peeling the clear coat around the part of the rim against the tires. Never rotated- same tires.
My 2010 Insight interior after only 13K miles was looking bad and I drove mostly by myself.
The paint after my 2006 Element was not so hot on all of my Hondas.
The Element was nice. But it was a gas guzzler- driving a box in the wind.
No more Hondas for awhile.
I had 11 new ones in all ( Honda-Acura mixes)
Best quality by far was my first year 86 Integra LS)

24.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up? My HHR has 25 and it's tiny compared to the 41 of a volvo wagon.

Try test driving the subaru XV Crosstrek

you can get a mild hybrid model as well if you like gadgets.
Best "carlike" awd around
21500-30000$ based on options and model

Its a downsized forester.
The base forester starts at 21.5k
The forester premium is
Subaru's you can generally get invoice -2% if you are a decent negotiator or a VIP member
(I pay 20$/year to leave no trace to be a vip member)

$25k sounds like a big ask when you can buy a number of vehicles in the next higher segment (CR-V, Forester, Escape, etc) for not much more.

That's pretty much the maximum you get in this size of vehicle. They could make them 6" longer and get 35 cuft which is about average for CRV/CX5/Escape sized SUV's, but that's never done anymore...

Agreed. However with the newness of HR-V been thinking are far as sales go, they are fairly 'hot' right now. That was pretty much confirmed on a casual recent visit to local Honda dealer and speaking with a salesman. Said they are moving off the lot relatively quickly. Could have been blowing smoke, but don't think so. Given time the novelty will wear off and the buy price will come down.

As noted, even in the current Honda line up, there are much better buys available.

The New Mazda CX-3 with AWD will be stiff competition. More power, better fuel economy, and I think it will end up cheaper when equally equipped. Initial driving reports say the Mazda has a mucher better driving character (no surprise) then the Honda.

Our Santa Fe Sport Turbo (Fully loaded except for AWD) was $23K. I would wait a while if interested in the HR-V. It's fairly new to the mkt and the prices will deflate with time.

The XV Crosstrek is 22ft^3 or 54ft with seat folded. Also good for taller passengers even in the backseat.

Forester is 34^3 and 75 with backseat folded.

All visibility even rearview is great.

EXACTLY!

And another thing that I forgot to mention is the MPG(compared to the CR-V) both being AWD(not fwd):

'16 HR-V - city:27/comb:29/hiwy:32

'15 CR-V - city:26/comb:28/hiwy:33*

for comparison:

'15 Rogue city: 25/comb:28/hiwy:32

The HR-V LX AWD starts at $21,165. That seems like a reasonable buy, if you could stay at that trim level and price. The EX AWD model starts at $23,215, and starts to encroach on the CR-V LX AWD at $24,695. Interestingly, the HR-V jumps from EX to EX-L w/ navigation, and it seems like you can't buy a leather-clad model without navigation.

We don't like it's pudgy looks but, I do like it ride & quiet!
OTOH, the Chevy Trax sibling to the Encore is only so-so looking but, really low rent on the interior.

I think the CX-3 is better looking too from what I have seen in the reviews. Quieter, quicker but, with less interior room especially in the rear seats, where I would still like some room.

I'm not really sure about the whole segment! Are any of them really any good?

The EX is the one of choice for us should my wife choose to buy(again, this is her vehicle). And she would like a small personal vehicle that's easy to park.

We want push button start(dealer installed RES) plus the Easy entry(door handle touch), and the few other features that may be worth getting in the EX AWD.

This is also a vehicle that in a few years, we'd give to our daughter.
