Tesla Model 3 vs BMW M3 video

Pretty impressive lap times. What surprised me was the statement that the M3P time was equal to the M3 Comp until the Pirellis gave out.
Does that mean just put a set of Pilot Sports on the Tesla and it just might better the BMW?

That callback to Throttle House's review was awesome.

Very impressive what Tesla achieved with the M3P. Hope the competition keeps pushing things further

Cammisa is one of my favorite car guys of all time. I’m glad he’s not anti EV in the process.

Heh, anti-EV? He's been (wrongly) accused of being a Tesla shill after his Cybertruck video.

I love Jason and appreciate the different insights he offers. His videos are so well produced and we are lucky to get them for free

What’s it all about, Alfy? Don’t have the need for speed and all I could think about as they sped through the countryside for no reason at all was, what about the animals who live there and cross the road?

24 hour endurance race? C'mon! I remember when this forum was "When it can do multiple passes at a drag strip" and then it became "When it can do more than 1 lap" and then it became "When it can do several track sessions", now it's "When I can take my daily drive and run the 24hr Le Mans"!

Get off it. Your Crown Vic/Camry isn't, either.
Agree. There is no street car that is doing a 24 hour race, at least not one made today. The closest cars ever made to that standard would probably be the MB W201 (190E) , the 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 versions, the BMW E30 M3 and maybe, for a few hours at least, the W116 450SEL 6.9. Brock Yates ran a 6.9 at Road Atlanta when the car was first out. Incredible a big sedan could handle that track, particularly the braking at the end of the long straight, as well as the eases and the sharp turns into 6 and 7. Amazing machine built to a standard not a price point, unlike the unexceptional cars being built today. But the Tesla 3 is an impressive machine. I just don’t want one shoved down my throat.

Actually, M3 would, considering it has the absolute overkill of an oil cooling system. No previous M3 compares in cooling capacity to any G-generation BMW.

It would overheat faster. If you look at the video, the cornering is still wider than that of BMW. I bet Pirelli on M3P is the same category as Michelin on BMW, and when it comes to performance, never doubt Pirelli.

The tires on the M3P are P Zero's. A very "mid" tire, indeed. Also, if you look all over the BMW forums, you note the M3 Comp comes with either Pirelli, or Michelin...and NOONE wants Pirelli. My personal experience anecdotally, as well as a quick Google, shows that Pirelli just isn't known for quality product. Sure they OEM for many of the big boys, but so do all the others. Noone actually replaces those tires with another set of Pirelli, though. They're like when Goodyear got the contract for C6 tires. All the driving schools were ripping them off and putting Michelin's on before students ever touched the cars.

Pirelli has tires that are equal to Michelin's performance, and some actually do faster laps, so Tesla decided to go with these particular Pirellis.
Take into consideration one more thing. What compound manufacturer wants! Pirelli once had the same tire model for specific OE orders and the same name but a different compound for aftermarket folks. I am a Michelin fan, but I bet you P Zero in aftermarket sale is different.

I will probably put Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on our M3P when the time comes. My guess is, for my use there will be no benefit in the Pilot Sport 4S. I have the 4S on our GS350 F Sport. Wonderful rubber.
I put the A/S on our TSX and a friends 2014 Corolla S. Highly recommended.

Interestingly, when I ordered the car in June Tesla told me they were currently delivering the M3P with Michelin tires, but mine came with Pirellis. Darn... Michelin might pick up that 1.5 second difference. Pirelli wins is at the cash register but Michelin makes up for it on rolling resistance, which could allow for more range.

PS4S is quieter, less squishy, and gives better steering feel. I run the AS4 as my winter tire on my Z4M and the PS4S the rest of the year. It's not like the AS is terrible but it's definitely different.

People don't want the Pirelli or Yokohamas but there is no evidence they are noticeably worse other than pro-Michelin forum bias. I bet if you put a Michelin on that Tesla it does the same thing. How your tire works also depends on how your car is set up.

I'm aware of the history, it's just usually not a popular place for car enthusiasts to align themselves.

I've definitely caught some crap for this myself. Apparently I'm a fake car enthusiast.

Pirellis haven't done well when it comes to vehicle review and testing. Many journalists won't buy them because compared to Michelins they are more likely to delaminate and completely shred when pushed hard on track if much oversteer is done in the process. This has been pretty well documented.

My logic is, I will never push the car past the limits of the AS4. A little more mileage (tires ain't cheap) and lower rolling resistance should offer a little more range. More range never hurts... Of course there is nothing wrong with the Pirellis either.

Not today's problem...
