I couldn't find anything on range when towing though. 🤷‍♂️

Tesla Finally Has Its First Semi-Truck and It’s Already a Hit With Truckers

Innovations including a centered driving position, fast charging and a 500-mile range are winning over drivers

Quick Summary

Tesla plans to begin shipping mass-produced Semis this summer from its Nevada Gigafactory after years of delays.

The first time Dakota Shearer drove a Tesla he took a wrong turn just outside Sparks, Nev., and got stuck on a bend that was too tight for his 40-foot trailer.

Normally, Shearer would reverse out of a jam by getting out of the truck several times to check his position in the road. But Shearer was seated in the center of the cab, eliminating the right-side blind spot, and he was flanked by screens showing every object around his tractor-trailer.

“I backed right out of there, no problem. It’s like I’d never done it in the first place,” Shearer said. “That right there showed me that the technology the Tesla has makes a big difference.”

Shearer is among the few American truckers to drive a pilot model Semi.

The Semi, by contrast, can travel 500 miles on a single charge, according to Tesla. For King Fio that means two or three round-trips a day from Long Beach to warehouses in the nearby Inland Empire or a single round-trip to Las Vegas. She has 20 Semis on order.

Tesla produces two Semi models with ranges of 325 miles and 500 miles. The company hasn’t publicly stated how much the Semi will cost and didn’t respond to requests for comment. Companies that ordered the vehicles are bound by nondisclosure agreements. But people familiar with the orders say they come in at under $300,000, or about double the cost of a diesel truck.

Battery-electric trucks have fewer moving parts than diesel engines and don’t need regular servicing.
He said the Semi pulled a 25,000-pound load of dog food up a mountain pass as though it wasn’t even there. He loved the smooth acceleration—and the attention.

100% failure without billions and billions of Gov tax dollars propping up these trucks.

Full Disclosure:
I own TSLA stock.
Probably so. I would say, however, that without those incentive programs, Tesla probably doesn't take on this endeavor. No one is making a program like this work without that help. A lot of companies couldn't make it work even with those programs (Lordstown, NIkola, Volta, etc).

Tesla doubled the price of their semis back in January. I'm still actually wondering if it really has 500 miles of range? Blowing snow and -20F and a full trailer what will be the actual range?

My bet, they sell a few, then it becomes an expensive flop, just like the Cyber Truck. Once people discover the range, problems in the cold, charging time, etc. things will go sour.

Not a Tesla fan but this really does show promise. With the infrastructure in place, add a few cab options and some short haul models it could a winner. IMHO eliminating diesel trucks and gas/diesel local delivery vehicles is a step in the right direction.
I agree.

And the regenerative braking makes a huge difference in both city and mountainous driving.

When I saw the Semi rollout, I thought, “Wow, this makes a lot of sense - could be a real winner if it meets the promised goals”.

I've seen the SEMI transporting loads of Teslas out of the Fremont plant for quite awhile; it seems like 2 years? Dunno, but at least a year.

That's pretty much all large tech innovations at the early stage. Even hybrid wouldn't have taken off without gov sub early on, but now everyone is buying Prius without subsidies.

Highly doubt they are bought for the range, more likely bought for local delivery duty or moving containers around in a port, etc. They won't replace long haul any time soon.

Maybe for Bay Area only delivery, but they have been used to deliver batteries from Arizona to California since forever because it is down hill run with load and uphill run without load.
