Tennessee proposes mandatory paternity tests

The whole "Who's your daddy" ploy is nothing but that, a ploy. The real reasons for wanting a comprehensive DNA database are manifold and are to a large part the sinister kind of reasons that most will dismiss as conspiracy theory nonsense. Wait and see.

I see it's 'Night at the Apollo' and Gary is trying his best.

I'm not a evil plot kinda guy - more of believer in the creeping socialist state ala Margaret Sanger and the do gooders.....but this stuff is just nasty.

Mandatory? Nice. That's about as sick as anything I've heard in awhile. Probably "W. you know who" is to blame......those evil usurpers of our rights.

And to rub salt on this wound, the State is making the couple pay for the mandatory testing unless they are poor. They hold the father's name hostage from the birth certificate unless the testing is done.

So, another added financial burden to hard-working responsible folk, while those who need this kind of testing the most pay nothing. I say if you can afford to bear children, you should pay the same as everyone else, or make this testing free to everyone.

I told you that CSI was a feature length public service promotional commercial. How do you think all those people are going to be able to sit around waiting for your murder to be solved?? It cost LARGE to have that glamorous a job. Don't you have any civic pride??

I see no way that this mandated paternity test will help the general public, except, at times, to embaress them. Even without this law, the general public can still request a paternity test.

Plus, this bil has no follow up such as requiring a search for the real father and demanding child support, nor does it exonerate the husband of financial obligation to the child.

I agree with many of the above posts that something nefarious is going on with the government officials. I hope this bill dies.

BTW, it goes without saying, that to get every child's paternity "proven", that means that they will be acquiring not only the child's DNA, but the father's as well.

All very true, and how perceptive and knowledgeable you are. I hope you are in law enforcement. Sadly not even all FBI is of your calibre.

There is another drawback to the national DNA database. Anyone could easily grab a paper coffee cup, or something else, you leave on a sidewalk cafe table and leave it a murder scene. Perhaps a steak knife, that you supposedly, ripped off when you left your table at a restaurant, winds up in the back of someone I killed and wanted you to take the fall for, has your DNA all over it.

Lets just say that DNA can be misused, to implicate others in many ways, and at the very least YOU become a suspect. Then at the least, it is YOUR face all over the media, and I get that promotion instead of you, because that is all I wanted rather than to have you found guilty of a crime.

I wonder what they plan to do in cases where the father dies before the baby is born, and there is no biological evidence available to test? If they are trying establish a legal relationship so that the father is financially responsible for the baby, they should let him sign as father without any test. Why create problems where there are none?

More stuff to debate and argue over ..with added elements that narrow our scope of liberty.

I really need to find a life with no shoes. There's always another one that I keep waiting for to drop. No shoes ...no waiting for the other one to land.

[can of worms] One could place the burden of child support on the child's future earnings, through a special child support tax paid by the person who benefited from it. [/can of worms]

I think we should have mandatory DNA testing in the entire country and uploaded in a single database so law enforcement agency can use this information to catch killers/child molesters/rapists and so on.

If you want to frame someone, take a skin sample, culture up some stem cells, make a few quarts of their blood, and spread it around a crime scene.

I've lived in TN all my life, there was a questionable paternity with one girl in my life almost 9 years ago, but she had a miscarriage. I could have been on Maury Povich!

Having such a database, in effect reverses the traditional chain of evidence and places the burden of proof of innocence on any suspect. Nobody is then innocent until proven guilty, but everyone is potentially guilty unless proven innocent.
