Techron Worked

I could not find the thread I read for reference. A long-time member recommended Techron or Regane HM to help cure OPE carburetor issues.

I'm skeptical (to say the least) of following advice given on this forum but I have to say it worked.

I have a 12 y/o Echo string trimmer with hard start issues and it would only run wide open.

I poured out the gas, added Techron, ran it as long as I could (which wasn't long considering it was almost pure Techron in the tank), let it sit while I did other yard chores, and went back about 30 minutes later.

Started hard as always. Had a bad smell that I assumed was the Techron, and it smoked a bit. I ran it WOT for a while and when I let off the throttle. It idled! Now it runs great, starts easier, and idles again.

I did the same to my Stihl leaf blower which was not having problems but figured it wouldn't hurt then poured the rest in the tank of my tractor.

From now on, I will use Techron as my annual maintenance on my OPE.

Thanks to whomever it was for mentioning this.

O oh.
I recently bought 2 bottles and used one of them based on good reviews I've read here, the fuel gauge needle was lagging once and someone here recommended techron. I will try using it every oil change in my vehicles.

I always add about 3 oz's per tank in my cars and I put a splash ( I know, not a good technical measure) along with the measured amount of Sta-Bil in my 5 gallon gas can for my OPE's. They seem to run well year after year.

I would worry about a scuffed piston doing that with no lube. Its a carb issue, no reason to punish the rest of the engine. Now, a 50:1 techron and oil mix on the other hand.

I never advised nor am I advising anyone to follow my procedure. I simply explained the procedure I used. If I was to blow up my well-used 12 y/o trimmer, I would have bought a new one without complaint.

Besides, it only ran sluggishly for a couple of seconds at best, so I highly doubt I scuffed a piston. It runs like new again.

I put a bit of STP carb cleaner in the fuel tank of my snow blower, I'd do the same for other small engines as regular maintenance for the carbs.

Agreed.

I'd never run a 2 stroke without oil. Never.

Me either. That's why I didn't drain all the fuel out.

I use store brand carb cleaner and Berryman's Chem-tool before taking apart OPE carbs. Last weekend, I couldn't get Dad's old Mantis to run after just getting it to pop on carb cleaner. It was late, I quit for the day. Yesterday, I decided to fix it. As I was carrying it to the bench, I gave it a try. It fired ,died, then lit and stayed lit. Only real difference was that the air cleaner was off. The white felt cleaner was covered in compost and good loam. I gave it a good blast of cleaner, let it dry for a few minutes. The Mantis is running great, it was smoking from a heavy dose of MMO,and Chemtool It turned over all 3 beds, about 500 sq feet of deep compost. I found the Mantis owners manual on line and it told me how to check the gear oil and what to use. Also the directions for storage longer than 2 weeks. Drain the tank and run the carb dry. There was less than a cup of fuel left in the tank. It was as easy as it gets to comply. Meantime, I am doing the opposite with the steel tank on the Chonda. Full to the brim with MMOed and Stabilized E10. Carb has been run dry.
