Tax prep woes ...

I just submitted our 2023 income taxes and I have to say I feel kind of traumatized. Between my wife's disorganized record keeping for her side business and those Byzantine IRS rules, I'm feeling traumatized.

Did I mention I'm feeling traumatized? 🤕
Same here..fleeced to the max. My buddies wife always pulls out the last bit of hidden details on 4/15 ...

Have had a rough bit with work since last year and unfortunately had to take an early withdrawal to remain solvent.

Have to pay between state a federal $11k. Sucks. But I guess having the funds, being fed, vehicles operational… still thankful.

Finally was able to collect unemployment.

Got a good interview coming up Wednesday. Really need this.

Good luck! Hope you get a killer offer.

Personal thoughts on the income tax.

Most individual income for the majority of Americans is produced through labor. Labor has value and a wage is given in exchange for it. In the Antebellum south, slaves worked for their employers (slave owners). The slaves' labor had great value but they, with rare exception, were paid nothing for it. The value of their labor was siphoned off at a 100% tax rate.

Since the 16th amendment passed in 1913 each American had an income tax burden of at least 1%, primarily on the wealthy. Today most Americans with an average income are in a 10-15% bracket. Some much higher and it creeps upward.

Comparing the slaves' (labor) tax rate to ours today, how can it be said that we aren't all just slaves, albeit somewhat less (10-15%).

IIRC if you can estimate fairly closely what you owe, & send that in, you can still get an extension?
Yes. I had to do this a few years ago. Tried to file myself and didn't understand a stock sale rules. I estimated and sent a big check and then went to a tax guy to figure it out. He was very impressed how close I came to what I owed.
