Hey everyone,

Those 40 Million card card numbers that got stolen at Target.....

Well, someone got my Credit Card info from Target and used it to charge $649.79 at walmart.com.

Called my CC company and they disabled it & will send me a new one. Of course do not have to pay the fradulent charge.

Now I gotta cancel & enter new card info on several places.

Please... everyone... check your statements.

You would think that in this day and age of technology and such, companies would take the necessary precautions to prevent this.

Just heard this story on the local tv news...

If you used a CREDIT OR DEBIT card at a brick and mortar Target store between November 27 and December 15 2013 your card information could have been compromised!
Contact your credit card issuing company and have them close your old account and issue you a new one. Same for debit cards make sure you cancel that card and have a new one issued with a new PIN number.

According to Target if you made a purchase at their
website you are NOT affected!

Man, Turk, sorry to hear that. Thankfully I haven't stepped into a Target since April. But you're right, everyone should be paying very careful attention to their credit card statements.

Nothing is 100% secure when you talk about credit cards. There are a lot of precautions they must legally take (PCI) but people still find ways to exploit gaps.

You'd be astonished how many don't; and you'd be further astonished how often and how easily the human element (error, oversight, malice, etc.) is the main factor in breaches like this.

I would like to see a system where a CC # is associated with an account and it requires manual intervention (two factor) to transfer credit to the card.

If I am going to make a $600 dollar purchase, i log into a website and transfer $600 of credit to the account. Then I make the online or store purchase and the # now has $0 line of credit. Subsequent purchases are rejected. When I pay the balance, the card company resets the credit to 0, requiring intervention again to activate credit; This would be extremely inconvenient for situations in which emergency purchases need to be made, but I suspect that is about 1% of what people use CC for; Perhaps a double secret code could be used to unlock the full power of the account.

I only have a debit card, but would like to see it enacted on that too; a flexible modifiable limit on how much $$ can be accessed electronically.

Yes. Dates the breach happened were Nov 29-Dec 15.

Problem is that it kind of does away with the idea of having a credit balance to work with. Want to bet that if someone had to transfer for each store purchase during the holidays that people would be using a CC? Also even debit cards are affected so unless you have a debit card that is tied to a account with minimal balance it would still be hit. I have heard of those that use a debit card like this just so it is harder to scam.

You have the dates incorrect.

THE CORRECT TIME FRAME FOR THE ISSUE IS
Between November 27 and December 15 2013.

I will be calling my banks and telling them to issue me new debit cards. I used one this past weekend at Target so I'm going to pay the extra $10 for now and just get a new card. Much easier than going through identity theft/fraud.

Is that the MO? I have not studied this caper.

I just saw a report on local TV (TGT headquarters is here) and it may never be known 100% for sure if it's tied to the Target security hole.

"The Minneapolis-based retailer says about 40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been impacted between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.

The breach may have been the result of software installed at the machines customers use to swipe their cards when paying for their purchases, a person familiar with the situation told The Wall Street Journal."

I would. I've dealt with identity theft already. Someone tried buying a 20,000 boat on my credit card and had all my account login information. Still to this day I don't know how they got into my online account. it scared the ever living daylights out of me.

Nip it in the bud ASAP. I hope you guys get it resolved. Capital One took care of my situation no questions asked.
