Tapping sound on start up

Alright guys, I have a 09 Dodge hemi 1/2 ton truck. It calls for the Chrysler ms-6395 oil spec in 5w-20. I live in Louisiana, so its not really cold, but the summers do get real hot, but I dont think that is an issue. When the truck was new it always got pp in the 5w-20 weight. Last year I got some deals on chevron supreme synthetic in the 5w-20 flavor...and have liked its results so far. The truck gets driven sporadically. Some weeks it goes for 500 miles...and some weeks it doesn't move. All in all it's around 8k a year. The oci's are every six months. The other day I noticed a faint tapping sound at first start up of the day. It only does it on the first start up. Any other start up during that day it doesn't do it. I have never noticed this before...but I really wasn't listening for it either. My old Chevy 5.3 did this also on a steady diet of M1 5w30. Anyone got any ideas? Switching to something like a 0w-20 keep this from happening?

+1...are you using a different oil filter with this change?

0w20 might help on startup at colder temps, but in LA you probably don't see low enough to make a difference between 0wxx and 5wxx.
 
Oh yea. I forgot to mention the oil filter. I have been using pure 1. Bought 6 on sale somewhere awhile ago. Do believe I'm gonna switch liter brands. Mabe the Mopar brand? I always thought pure 1 was one of the best. I did use wix for probably 2 years before I got the pure 1's.
 
as others have said its likely a filter ADBV issue. when i had a 2012 hemi ram i ran a Ford Motorcraft FL820s filter. it has a silicon ADBV and is arguably the best filter you can buy for $4 period.

try a FL820s and see if that helps. the oil you are using are great and not the issue.

The tapping sound lasts for about 3-4 seconds on start up. I commonly crank and let it idle for about 30 sec before I start to move. I'm gonna stop by somewhere today and pick up a mopar branded filter and change the filter...not the oil and see if it makes any difference. Hopefully it will. What are the odds of a defective oil filter? Any other recommendations on a good "Full Flow" type oil filter?
 
It's called hemi tick. Look it up.
I suggest sea foaming or running some kind of flush to clean it out then the best possible oil money can buy. Red line maybe.
It's caused by oil not getting up top fast enough due to deposits inside the pushrods.
Mine never did it however my friends 09 did. First we did a seafoam flush,changed the oil. Then new oil and half a can seafoam,drove 3000kms then the last half can.
It would tick for about 40 seconds when we first started then by the end it only lasted around 5 seconds.
It's got new oil now and we decided to try mmo. It's 1000kms into the mmo run and the tick at start up has almost vanished.
Do you drive it hard. The deposits form because the engine never gets spun out. Drive it hard sometimes to get the oil really hot and the oil pump pumping full blast. It should help.
 
I'd just change your current P1 filter for one the others you already have right now. No need to change oil, just top off lost volume to filter change. If your tick goes away you know you got a bum filter. Otherwise you know to look at other causes.

I recently had a wix filter that gave me noisy cold starts. I wish I had changed it out earlier. Also if a new filter gives you relief, purolator will most likey give you a new one or credit if you send them the defective unit. Purolator, and wix in my case, both make excellent products, so I wouldn't write them off just yet. Especially if you have stock on hand.
 
Seems like another problem with the Pure One filters. IMO they have gone down in quality the last year or two. Purolator no longer warrants their filters past 3000 miles; their warranty used to be for the duration of factory recommended OCI.

I've noticed some ticking on startup in our engines with Pure One filters...currently using the last of my stockpile.

I've had some noise with PureOne's as well, but in their defense just about everything else too.

If your truck will take one of the Motorcraft "S" series filters spin one of those on. Worked wonders for my Jeep. For no obvious reason Fram Tough Guards also give me fanstastic starts when legions of other filters don't, but the Motorcraft "S" is a knat hair better.

It will the fl820s and the mo899 Chrysler filter cross reference for the hemi. When I had my 2012 ram I ran the fl820s it's cheaper too. It's the best filter anywhere for 4$ regular price.
 
Switch to Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 and a Wix, Napa or Fram filter. Run 3 OCI's of no more than 5000 miles and see if it helps.
 
Put half a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in it next oil change. It may burn off in the first 500 miles, so don't be alarmed.
 
When buying an oil filter, try blowing into it to make sure the ADBV is good. I've started doing this ever since I ran into some defective M1 filters. All 3 filters I ordered on Amazon turned out to have leaking ADBV. The odds of that happening makes me suspicious of where they really came from, but I digress. If you buy them in a real store, you can check it yourself and be pretty sure it came from a legitimate source.

This is an especially sneaky problem for vehicles that don't have a real-time oil pressure gauge, as that would be the best way to know it's happening. You're lucky you were able to hear it tapping, or were paying enough attention to notice.

You know you may just have one leaky lifter that is starting to go bad and needs to be replaced.

I hate to say it man, but the last thing I'd want to see in the auto parts store is someone french'n the filters to find a good one.


I believe the 5.7L filters sit upside down, so the ADBV is a non-issue. Also, as previously mentioned: Hemi's tick.

I actually started doing this also after reading about it here. What I found,Wix filters never seal and always leak,and Fram always are sealed tight as a drum.
