Yes, the costs bid to me by multiple installers were unsubstantiated. Plain and simple. I never said folks should work for nothing. But when I know the item cost, know the install path, have all the electrical in place (somehow those tradespeople could justify their costs in their estimate), and it’s ready to go… the hvac guys give a round number that amounts to hundreds upon hundreds of dollars per hour per person. Way, way, way more than any other tradesman I’ve ever hired, or had on the books on my job at that time. And those other folks’ tools need replacement, vehicles need insurance, and whatever else too.Installers are thieves. Guess you work for nothing. Don't have to buy tools and they do wear out, truck ,insurance or drive to the supply house for free. Get someone off Craigs list see what kind of job you get. Supply me with the unit or a part I'm walking. I'm not working for someone that thinks they know every thing involved.
Actually I did the job with my wife. And a decade later it’s still putting out perfect gear and cooling. These systems aren’t complex. They get sold on the basis of a simpler install, and then the hand waving lie is “but you don’t know everything involved”, so we need to charge $$$ as a result.
