Talk to me about mini splits

Installers are thieves. Guess you work for nothing. Don't have to buy tools and they do wear out, truck ,insurance or drive to the supply house for free. Get someone off Craigs list see what kind of job you get. Supply me with the unit or a part I'm walking. I'm not working for someone that thinks they know every thing involved.
Yes, the costs bid to me by multiple installers were unsubstantiated. Plain and simple. I never said folks should work for nothing. But when I know the item cost, know the install path, have all the electrical in place (somehow those tradespeople could justify their costs in their estimate), and it’s ready to go… the hvac guys give a round number that amounts to hundreds upon hundreds of dollars per hour per person. Way, way, way more than any other tradesman I’ve ever hired, or had on the books on my job at that time. And those other folks’ tools need replacement, vehicles need insurance, and whatever else too.

Actually I did the job with my wife. And a decade later it’s still putting out perfect gear and cooling. These systems aren’t complex. They get sold on the basis of a simpler install, and then the hand waving lie is “but you don’t know everything involved”, so we need to charge $$$ as a result.

The mini split is popular and in demand. But customers are being taken advantage of. I had some extimates done in 2017. Very very high estimates. I would not want to see what they are now. That being said. I had my nephew install 2 systems 24,000 btu. We had wall heaters........$$$$$

That being said the calibration on the lower level one has never been right. At one point I had a HVAC company come out to do some pan heaters that I did not know I needed until very cold weather. I was helping him some with taking the units apart, and putting back together. When he left I ended up pulling things apart again because he was mashing metal tabs that meshed panels together. So I took a pliers and straightened tabs, and tied wires up in a better manner. I was kind of peed off about it at the time. He said his dog just died..........

But not an excuse for poor assembly work.

I think I'm going to install a 9,000 btu one in my shop sometime in the future. Looks like the freon is doing a switch over on heat pumps.
My sister just had a qoute for I believe a 12,000 btu ductless. Pretty sure it was one head unit. I think it was approaching $9000.

It's been over a year since anyone has posted in this thread. So I thought I would revive it instead of starting another. I just had a 1 ton, (12,000 BTU), Mitsubishi Mini Split A/C Heat Pump installed in my master bedroom 2 days ago. The total cost of everything including professional installation was right around $3,750.00 and change.

That includes a 10 year warranty on parts. And 2 years on labor. I couldn't be happier with the unit, or the guys who installed it. They showed up at 8:30 AM, and were all done, and showing me how the remote functions by 1:00 PM.

Our master bedroom faces west, and gets the full brunt of the late afternoon Sun. Which in the dead of Summer causes the master bedroom to get 5 to 7 degrees hotter than the thermostat setting for the rest of the house.

Now I could hang meat above the bed! And the best part is this thing is all but silent. Even running on high. On mid range settings it barely pulls 6 amps, on a 15 amp breaker. At night I can now raise the main unit thermostat, and fire up the Mini Split, and have it nice and cool for sleeping. It was worth every penny!

My only complaint is I didn't do it sooner!
