Thinking about selling the wife’s 2019 Highlander and buying her a 2018-2019 Lexus GX460

what is the good, bad and ugly?

Had a 2014 which is very similar and it was great for 3 years 5x,000 miles. The 3rd row is pretty small but if you only need 2 rows it’s great other than the 14-16 mpg.

My BIL has one, comments so far are spot on. Have you considered upgrading to the RX 350...get the luxury feel, still maintain the ride, and gas mileage.

I have an earlier GX470 with 140,000 flawless miles. Feels like it did when it was new and expect we'll get another few hundred thou out of it. It is a great freeway and secondary highway ride - a little like "your dad's Buick" but that's part of why we bought it. No SUV is a sports car. We removed the third row as we have dogs to carry, not kids. 18 mpg all-around average and I am light on the throttle. Bank vault solid, great headroom - works for us!

While we appreciate the “better” ride and feel of the car-based Highlander, my wife wants to sit higher up and be able to see farther down the road and she wants a boxier-more square vehicle that doesn’t look like every other mid size SUV on the road.
We went from a 2nd gen Sequoia to the Highlander and she wants some V8, height and different look back.

can you tell I really don’t want anything other than a Toyota in the driveway?

I have a 2011. I dont know that I would recommend it unless you have a specific set of needs, and that is the ability to offroad and tow.

If you dont need those two things(or even just one of them) I think there are better options out there. Its not a particularly good handling or efficiency vehicle and the V8 is kinda soft down low. The tech in the inside is dated.

But it will tow and will offroad fairly well and do it in luxury. The dump trailer in the picture below was like 8000 lbs I think. The rock alone scaled at 6500.

i kinda regret not just caughing up the money for a Land Cruiser or LX570 though. The 4.6L tows ok but the 5.7L and the 8 speed would have been really nice.

Oh OK, the RX 350 is a Lexus

these trucks have been pretty much the same for about 10 years. you can step down a couple years and get a good deal.

the GX depreciates like a rock falling off a cliff compared to the Cruiser or LX.

Even compared to the 4Runner. I bought it because, for similar year and miles, the GX was a few thousand cheaper it seemed like.

i have a feeling that may be coming to an end as the popularity increases.

i’ve never understood why the 4Runner has been so popular for so long here. when you travel deep into toyota country you will struggle to find a single 4Runner/Surf on the road.

selling poverty versions of the prado would destroy gx sales but they’re better in every way

Ask what?

Im asking if anyone has had problems with late models before I buy. Trying to find real reviews online is a waste of time.
Are you gunna buy anything else?

And there are problems. Cam tower leak, common with the 5.7L as well. There is a water jacket leak that can occur under the manifold that is a serious PITA from a time/labor standpoint. Rear main seals seem to leak sometimes. And secondary air pump failures which seems to be very expensive, but they may have fixed it in later models, not sure.

i am actually not sure why people obsess over Toyota’s. The list of common failures is just as obnoxious and expensive as any other brand. The GX for me was a unique package being a midsized BOF suv with a V8. There are no others like it. But it doesn't impress me in any particular way other than its uniqueness.

GX 460 has a 4.6L. Not a 5.7L

air injection pump stuff was over about 2012 or so.

people obsess over Toyota’s because when they do have problems, they usually issue repair campaigns and fix not only the cars on the road that might be 16 years old (frame campaign) but stuff that might be 3 years old. They fix production and offer to fix out of warranty stuff.

also, my Toyota’s that I’ve bought new have never been in a dealership service department. Tundra has 150k miles and the Highlander 30k now.

Common issue that I’ve seen is the 2nd row seat release cable gets loose and is a pita to get back on track. Nothing needs to be replaced, but the seat has to be removed to get the cable clip back in place. You could technically do it with the seats in the car but it’s a very tight fit.

Another very common issue I’ve seen is the neutral safety switch. Goes into limp mode. Part isn’t too expensive, but is a major pita to remove because it usually seizes to the transmission due to being next to the passenger side cat. Plus you don’t have much leverage since it’s in a tight location.

otherwise they are reliable and can handle a lot of abuse. I have a regular that has a ‘16 GX460 85k miles owned since new. Has missed a few oil changes by 2-3k miles, but engine still runs like new.
