Talk me into (or out of) switching to M1 0w40

The NAPA $4.99/qt deal for Mobil 1 has me really really tempted to just make the switch to the 0w40 for my car. Been running Motul 300V 5w30 for the last year and it seems to do well for the occasional track day, city driving, and frequent WOT runs. But at $15/qt it's killing my wallet to buy 10qt every 6-9 months.

With M1's VI of 185 and HTHS of 3.8, and the VW approval, it seems stupid not to use it. I just hope it withstands the extreme abuse I put on my car.

The other more reasonably priced ones I'd considered that look quite stout (and carry VW 502/505):

Motul 8100 X-lite 0w30 (VI 177, HTHS 3.57)
Liqui-Moly Synthoil Longtime 0w30 (VI 186, HTHS 3.5+)
Liqui-Moly Synthoil Energy 0w40 (VI 181, HTHS 3.6)

I've not totally ruled out RLI 0w30 or 5w30, but their tech guys are sorta wishy-washy about the HTHS being 3.5 or better (which my manufacturer specs). Redline 5w30 is the other obvious choice but it's barely any cheaper than the 300V.

Based on Doug's enlightenment on what M1 0w40 is used in, and under what conditions, I say go for it. Even at $8/quart (par for Euro oils here in the US) it's a fine oil.

I agree that M1 0w40 is probably one of the best oils in the world for the applications calling for 40 weight. I think that if M1 0w40 won't stand to abuse then no other oil can handle it either.

Good UOA and results in my Volvo - strongly recommend it.

You're parsing a few points here and there on values, but the real question is performance. When you consider the price break compared with what you're using...why even ponder...just switch!

One thing about M1 0W40 is it won't let you down; Its the Arnold Schwarzenegger of motor oils

It will impregnate your maid?

M1 0W-40 meets the required specs for your Audi.
It has proven to be a reliable oil in Euro apps.
I don't know that Motul 300V is actually any better, although it sure is more expensive.
Do you have any UOAs to show how well the Motul holds up in you car?
It would be interesting to see whether the M1 does as well or better.
You could pay for a couple of UOAs out of what you'll save running M1 over Motul and still have some extra change left in your pocket.
Finally, Redline does offer oils other than the two you've mentioned, some of which have HTHS >3.5 without any doubt.
From what I've seen, you could probably buy Redline for ~$11.00/qt shipped, so it would still be cheaper than Motul 300V, and I would think better able to stand abuse.

IMHO its one of the best oils you can buy, I have used it in a bunch of German cars with great results. In everything from 5 cylinder diesels to V12's.

Yes, but I have yet to see how it withstands track days and racing.

My Motul 300V UOAs were quite good, though I wouldn't say they're two or three times better than my old Lubro-Moly Synthoil Premium 5w40 UOA was.

Dan,

I've been super happy with M1 5w-50 for track / street duty. This link shows a UOA after about 2000mi, but 300+ of those were during hard track duty (1:48:2x @ Mid-Ohio on street tires!

)

Mobil 1 5w-50 UOA

As you can see from the UOA, TBN barely moved (believe it starts at 11.8), and it had sheared from a light 50w to a 40w.

I realize this is a different variety of Mobil 1, but by the associative property I would believe 0w-40 to be just as stout. Everyone other than me runs M1 0w-40 in their Porsches at track events, and they've not had issues.

Go for it!

Mobil recommends it as a racing oil. I know Doug and other folks have mentioned many professional, high end racing teams pouring it into their cars. I used it in my VR6 24v Jetta, which saw a lot of miles on track, and I continue to use it in my Miata, which sees a lot of hard, hard miles on track!

It ought to serve you well, but it'll be interesting to see what the UOAs look like!

I think I'll give it a shot and maybe pull a sample at the halfway point to see how it's doing.

For $50/change I could do it twice or thrice as often as the 300V if the racing has me concerned, I guess.

I guess I would consider Rotella T6 5w40 too, though I don't know how I feel about that for race use.
