Heck Yeah I remove them and clean them. Its all in the details. If I see pitting, I sand and paint.

Every car that gets detailed at my shop will get the wheel barrels cleaned and it can add a significant amount of time to the detail even with the best chemicals and tools...but it is totally worth is as it makes the vehicles look that much better when the wheels are properly cleaned.

I have measured before due to the sheer amount of dust that collects on my rx7's wheels. 2.5lbs lighter after cleaning inside and out. So in reality, it does make your car ever so slightly more efficient as it is weight reduction. It isn't useless. Just negligible.

How can you have 2.5 lbs worth of brake dust when the pads themselves don't weight much more than that?

Probably 0.25 oz ?

Don't forget to "wax your knob"

When I detailed for a living I charged $25 per wheel for the service. Only high end customers saw it as necessary. My own cars? I pay to have the tires rotated and couldn't care less what the backside looks like. There are bendable brushes that will do the job if someone deems it necessary.

too much work, especially since I have a slanted driveway I'd have to pull into my garage to remove a tire.

Also letting the tire dry so they don't end up sticking to the hubs when I need to rotate or work on my brakes. Not worth my time at all. A good de-greaser usually cleans them up good in case I ever end up selling the wheels.
