My wife and I are going to Taiwan in '08 and I was looking through some pictures and thought I would post them here.

By the way, these are from Kaouhsiung (her home city) when we went in 2006.
There actually are some nice country areas in Taiwan. See the hot springs. I love visiting the temples. Of course eat in the night markets! (GREAT chow!) Stay away from some alleys with girls and don't stare at the betel nut girls or your wife will smack you.
The country certainly has a reputation for its food. I usually gorge myself on ridiculously cheap fried-rice lunches and cheap sushi and wash it down with bubble tea.
There aren't many betel nuts girls in Kaouhsiung, they seem to be out in the suburbs. Since my wife is from Kaouhsiung, we primarily hung around that part of the island. I saw some around Tainan, though. I don't get the fascination with them. Just skinny girls in bikinis / underwear trying to sell a drug.... wait...
I love the fresh fish places - so many kinds of fish to pick from!! Do try the night markets. Have your wife take you to the national museum if you get up to Taipei. Also have her take you to some big temples.
I never actually chewed on a betel nut. Didn't want to turn my teeth red and stuff. Gross. Some of the girls aren't that skinny....oh wait, I'm not supposed to look.
