T5 oil recomendation

I've got an 87 camaro with a NWC (non world class) T5 five speed trans. I rebuilt the trans several thousand miles ago and am using valvoline Dexron III/mercron. I'd like to make the switch to synthetic now since the new replacement gears have had a chance to seat in and there should be much more wear (other than normal).

Anyone had experience with this trans using the synthetic atf or redline mtl oil? Amsoil speciaies their standard synthetic atf for this application.

I had a 1990 LX 5.0 and I used MTL with great results. I also used Amsoil ATF....and MTL is much better in the T-5.

Thanks for your response. I lost a front bearing in my T5 and rebuilt it, and after rebuilding it shifts better than when it was new. And, I'd like to keep it that way for another 150k miles

I'll try to dig up some MTL locally.

I just changed my 2002 Camaro's T5 (V6 model) to High-temp Redline ATF and it works far better than the Valvoline ATF did. It's silent now. I recommend it if your T5 also calls for ATF.

Dood, if you have a NWC T5, you should NOT be using ATF!!! Only the WC T5s should be filled with ATF, the older ones like yours should use gear lube.

I have an 88 IROC which does have the WC T5, and I'm running Mobil 1 ATF in the thing, with good results.

I recommend you go over to www.thirdgen.org to ask all your Camaro related questions. That place is *the* specialty third-gen Camaro hangout, excellent technical knowledge over there for all aspects of the car.

Older T5's do use gear oil, but not the newer ones. I've went 144k miles on ATF in this trans, and lost a front bearing. I have just rebuilt the trans a relatively short time ago. The car sat for 5 years and the bearings rusted, and that was that for the bearings. Everything else was in excelent shape and was re-used.

And, I purchased the car new, and the first trans oil change was by me and ATF came out of the trans from the factory.

I know about TGO. I'm "alloy" there also. I build the big wilwood brake kits and billet strut mounts for Spohn Performance.
