I think so too, but the noise is just driving me crazy because otherwise it is a very quiet car

I went from WS ATF to Redline D4 (drain and fill) and no difference whatsoever. I will do another one in a while (that stuff is expensive). One person supposedly did a Mobil 1 flush and whine was improved. I'm not convinced as this is highly subjective. Other people tried D6 with no results.

Interestingly, when people got transmissions replaced (USA) or repaired (Australia) under warranty, the noise invariably came back. Some kind of design problem.

I think you need to do a full fluid exchange to notice any difference. If you do drain and fill, 40% of the old fluid remains in there. I did two drains and fills and it did make a difference although some noise is still there. I will do another one this weekend and see what happens. The whine comes from the final drive and often it just stays there without getting any worse. How many miles on you car?

Agreed. 33,000. Had the noise since 20,000 or so.

I suggested a cooler line flush on the Honda forum and was told that it's not a good idea on my 6th generation Accord. They said it would be harmful to the A/T and that was why Honda recommends 3 or 4 D&R's. Honda definitely prohibits any kind of power flush of the A/T.

THis is always a good idea

Probably a good idea to do a used oil analysis for the ATF to see if there is any excessive amount of wear metals. If not, I would not worry about this noise too much. Try to do another drain and fill with D4 and see if the noise goes away.

Another update - did one more drain and fill with Redline D4 this weekend, I assume this last drain and fill got the remaining T-IV out of the system. The gear whine has reduced significantly, now I really have to listen to hear it in the 40-55 mph range. It is a little louder at 30-40 range but obviously better than with T-IV ATF. I also run an external transmission cooler so my transmission temp does not get above 60C even on the hottest days. Without the cooler it used to be around 80C

Turn the radio up a little louder,

Well, here is an update - I had redline D4 in my transmission for about 8000 miles and the whine has gotten a little lounder, possibly due to D4 getting a bit contaminated by now... I've done a lot of mountain driving that put a lot of stress on the fluid, so I am up for another drain and fill. This time I've ordered Redline High Temp ATF that has higher viscousity than D4 and hopefully will eliminate the whine all together. If it comes in by the weekend will update you after I do the drain and fill. I talked to Dave at Redline and he said High Temp should work fine in this transmission with the exception that I may get some harder shifts due to higher viscousity. Since this transmission is adaptable I will reset the ECU after drain and fill and will saa how it works...

Only problem with High-Temp is that it might not be HFM friendly for a transmission requiring T-IV. Harder shifts will not be from the visc increase but from the possible lack of friction modifiers.

If the shift quality is overly harsh after the change to Hightemp, you can add an ounce of Lubegard Platinum for each quart used.

I used Redline D4 in a nonT-IV required Avalon last spring, and after reading this thread I realize the trans whine that I had for the last year or so is gone! It was a mild whine and I used the radio volume knob to "fix" it. Interesting though, so the D4 may have something to it.

I have never had any luck getting a new fluid to fix noisy manual transmissions, rear differentials or FWD trans-axles.

Well, I did two drains and fills with Redline High Temp ATF this weekend replacing Redline D4. Suprisingly, there is only a minor difference in the gear whine I was trying to eliminate. It was strange because High Temp ATF has almost twice the vsicousity of D4 and I was expecting the whine to go completely away, but it did not happen. When I switched from T-IV to Redline D4 I noticed significant reduction in gear whine, but hardly any difference from D4 to Hight Temp. The transmission shifts exactly the same with Hight Temp as it did with D4, no difference at all. The whine became almost unnoticable ftom 40 to 55 mph but still there from 25 to 40 mph. I guess I just have to live with it...

Yeah, I think you'll have to live with it. My fiances mom owns an '05 Corolla that has had a "whine" noise since I can remember. It seems to run/shift great though with 115,000 miles.

When I originally researched the issue I realized that some of Aisin-Warner transmissions used in Toyotas have this problem, it does not get worse, just annoying. I bought this car used with 92,000 miles and now I have 125,000 on it, the transmission shifts agreat and otherwise does not have any problems. I did UOA on the fluid once and it was good, so I am not too concerned, I just wanted to get rid of this whine. At this point it is so faint that you really have to listen to hear it, but I was hoping to eliminate it all together...

I am curious how many other toyota owners have this differential whine. My mother has 03 Corolla and it does not whine. I also have 01 Echo and it does not whine although that one is manual. Any other toyota owners here?
