hey guys, so recently my transmission on my 2013 Hyundai equus went out, I'm going to have to get a remanuafacture unit put in. My mechanic is willing to switch out whatever fluid they have in the transmission and put in a choice ATF that I want.

There was proposal of

AMSOIL Signature Series fuel efficient ATF fluid
Valvoline extended protection ATF
Ravenol sp-IV-RR fluid
Redline D6 ATF
Liquid moly Top Tec ATF 1800 (I know there is an R version but cant seem to find it in the U.S)

I am really leaning toward Valvoline but would like to get some thoughts from people in the forum before I make a $5k mistake and blow another transmission.

Thanks

Stay with the shipped fluid initially.....If this reman has issues & needs to be exchanged you will lose all that boutique ATF.

that is a good idea, however if the fluid meet spec of the transmission, would it matter?

I'm just trying to put in a better spec fluid that does not break down as fast and went through the same failure.

I went Redline D6 in my 14 X3. Have had it in the transmission for 18k with smoooth results.

I would stay with the fluid from the rebuilder at least until the warranty has expired. If you change it out and then have a problem the rebuilder might use that as grounds for denying a warranty claim.

How is it breaking down exactly? And was that the problem or was it a material or design defect that caused the failure?

well its only 66k miles and its hard shifting into 2nd and 3rd, inspection today saw metal in the oil. Enough for warranty to agree to replace the transmission

All of which is probably an issue with the transmission rather than the fluid. I’ve seen some transmissions with pretty vile looking fluid and they still shift okay and don’t have metal in the oil.
