My sister in law had her computer infected by a rogue program called System Fix. It totally jacked up her computer. Here is what it did:

1. Kept popping up multiple windows saying her computer had errors
2. Deleted/hid all her desk top icons
3. Deleted or hid her control panel icons (No My Computer, Control Panel or documents etc)
4. Program icons showed empty in the All Programs list
5.. System Restore was not available.

I used the free versions of Malwarebytes and Superantispyware to clean it up and used the "repair" features in Superantispyware to fix the above issues.

This program did more than any I have seen as far as what appeared to be affected.

She thinks she got it thru a Yahoo messenger link.

Saved again!

Thanks for posting the fix to the "Fix".

I got infected with it a couple weeks ago. Did the same thing, hide all icons, clear the start menu, black desktop background, and throwing a bunch of error messages saying Hard drive had lost 20% speed, etc. A bunch of bogus scans to get you to hand over money.

Malwarebytes got me going again, but I still have instances of iexplore.exe running in the background, and sometimes when I want to go to a website it goes to a scam search site or domain squatted site.

Kaspersky Virus removal tool found more of this program that Malwarebytes, Adaware, and Spybot didn't.

I'd check your sister in law's computer for iexplore.exe processes running in the background taking up memory.

That's the joys of using Linux. No pain in the rear malware to effect it. Good thingan you got it all cleaned up. I used Kaspersky when i had window's xp and it did a good job keeping my laptop clean.
