I have a 1998 Volvo S70 with 202,400 miles on it.
My mechanic tells me that because of the
High miles ,I should not switch to a
synthetic oil .
True or False ?
Thanks

What did you use so far?
Nice thick synthetic oil like Rotella T6 or M1 5W40 TDT would do fine.

its true because synthetic will clean the residues and may expose the leaks already there.
its false since synthetic can be used on any commuter car engine.
your call

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-40. Problem solved.

The 5w-40 or 0w-40 synthetics would be fine too, but I think you'll benefit from the high mileage stuff.

I say he's Full of Hogwash.

Just did an oilchange on the vibe in my sig.
last August 25th, i put 4.5 qts of Pennzoil Platinum into it with near as i can remember, 175k mi on the dash.

April 11, i drained that out (did spill a little) and haven't Drained the filter, but I got just over 4 qts out of it. (179,028mi on dash)

and this is an engine that typically loves to consume oil as they "get up there" (Toyota 1zzfe 1.8l)

the real question though boils down to why you want to switch to Synthetic anyhow. what are Your Reasons? what are your driving habits like? etc.
will syn really benefit you in some way?

i would use dino in that car but most important make sure your timing belt is good if that breaks its over in some cases. I would use hm 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter

My research on the values of syn oil tells me that it benefits the engine...
Particularly with reference to better gas mileage.
Because it lasts longer ,ie. I can travel twice as far between oil changes.
I drive about 40 miles per day highway and 10 miles per day city .
Twice a month I do 80 miles per day hwy and 25 per day, city.
I want this car to last a long time and want to use
The best type of oil .

Good question - probably the first time this has come up. Hopefully someone knows whether this is ok? It seems so radical.

It depends on the wear on your car, if it had leaks or not.

If it did it will leak more but if on good condition it might be noisier

Where is the smiley for toung-in -cheek?

I'd use a blend like Pennzoil Gold. If you notice consumption/leak issues in the future, switch to MaxLife Blend. (red bottle) In Texas, 10w30 or 10W-40 might be a consideration if you have to continually top off with 5w30. I'd stick to 5k OCI.

I have a 99 dodge 3.3 with 200,000 miles. It leaked a little until a year ago. I tried synthetic oil and it now has a pan under it to catch the large leaks. Going back to conventional and adding "stop leak" has not reduced the leaking. I wish I had never tried the synthetic.

This car has already lasted a long time, mileage wise.
If you want something to drive as much as you say you will be driving,I think you should've bought a newer car.
Anyway,if it has been on dino for this long I would just use a HM dino and change every 5k.
Enjoy your new car.

+1

If you like Valvoline then I'd use Maxlife 5/10w30. Would be a good choice for your car either way. I use Durablend but I would definitely use Maxlife if it didn't come in 20w50 only down here!
