Synthetic Oil Recommendation for 1995 VW 1.9TD

I am having a 1.9TD (180,000km) installed in my 1984 Vanagon Westfalia.
-Did VW use a synthetic oil in this engine?
-Who makes the VW branded synthetic?
-Would Amsoil be a better quality oil than the VW brand?
-What is the recommended viscosity for ambient temperatures from 10-40 degrees Centigrade?

15w-40 or 15w-50 - you could use the 15w-50 Mobil 1 for example, or the Amsoil 15w-40 HD diesel and marine engine oil.
