Synthetic oil consumption?

We are the second owner of my wifes truck that used Mobil clean 5000 for 90,000 miles and I have performed 3 oil changes so far using the same oil at 5000 OCI's and it was right on the full mark. My wife drives a lot so I decided to switch to Mobil 1 Extended Performance and extend her OCI's, however after only 4000 miles it is down almost a qt...WHY? If I need to pay for 5 qts of oil and then 3 more qts for a 12,000 mile OCI I might as well just go back to Mobil clean 5000 at $11 for 5 qts and change every 5000 miles with no top off's!

For the record my truck has used Mobil 1 it's entire life and with 291,000 miles on it only uses a 1/2 a qt in 10,000 miles.

When I changed to a synthetic I had some consumption for the first couple OCIs. Give things a chance to come to equilibrium with the new oil. If you are still having consumption after the second OCI then switch back.

It can take a couple of oci's for the consumption to settle down. If it doesn't, switch back.

But why is it consuming it in the first place? Mind you this truck did not burn one drop of conventional oil in 5,000 mile OCI's. What causes the consumption to slow down after a few oil changes?

I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance and have no oil consumption at all. No reason EP would use more oil than dino. In fact synt normally uses less oil than dino .

The dipstick dont lie...102,700 to 107,700 on conventional oil did not use a drop, it was right on the full mark. 107,700 switched to EP and now at 111,854 it is down almost a qt.

I had a Honda CRV that was switched to PP at about 50k on the clock consume PP for 2 OCI's and then it stopped consuming. Don't know why but it did.

Your seals might need to get used to the new oil. It's unfortunate it has to be this way but there is such a thing as too clean sometimes.
