If consumption is 1 quart in 5000 miles and the truck doesn't leak or smoke, does that mean 1 quart of VI additive burned off?

Oil is conventional Xw-30.

I have had Valvoline burn off like that in motorcycles. But it is likely that your car uses a little oil and you aren't able to see it.

Well, yes...whatever is in the oil is burned off. You also probably have burnt deposits in the engine that preceed or occur in conjuction with the vaporization and burnoff. Hence, the eventual need for auto-rx.

1qt. in 5k isn't bad. In other words, it may be normal for this type of engine/driving conditions. If it increases, you may need to either consider a heavier weight eg. 5-40 or auto-rx.

This is why I will state that using a 'heavier' weight now eg. Delvac 1 5-40 will a) diminish or eliminate your consumption and b) keep the engine as clean as day 1 thereby eliminating the need for auto-rx....but then there are those that embrace a 5-20...

Some engines will consume Mobil 1 30wts. that much and no VII's are used. Most starburst conventional oils thin rapidly by design. It's probably a viscosity related issue, since it's thinned to near 20wt. range after 1K miles.
