How much are the local shops and dealers charging for a full synthetic oil change in your area?

The dealership that my parents bought the Prius from charges $55 for Eneos 0w-20 synthetic. The humongous Toyota dealer (in a different city) that I usually take the Prius to for servicing charges $65 for an oil change with Toyota 0w-20 synthetic. Jiffy Lube charges $80 for any flavor of Pennzoil Platinum. Firestone charges $40 w/coupon for Kendall GT-1 synthetic, but they only stock 5w-30. Walmart charges $55 for any brand, any grade.

There seems to be a wide range of prices for synthetic oil changes, possibly because it is viewed as a "premium option" and shops can get away with making it a high profit oil change. Lame.

BTW...let's keep this on topic...please, no posts about "I can change it myself for less" because that isn't what this thread is about. Thanks.

The Valvoline I used to work charged about $68.99 for up to five quarts, most other places i've noticed are in the high 50's.

Standalone, Oil change only, or "A" service? Because those are two different things.

Service A. It boils down to an oil/filter change, doesn't it? Sure, they claim to do a few other checks, but so does JiffyLube and most other quick lube places.

That explains it. A service includes a tire rotation and a more thorough inspection, supposedly. In other words, it is a "minor service." My servicing dealer charges $99 for a minor service with synthetic oil-- $30 on top of the oil change. This same dealer, for their standalone oil changes, no longer does an inspection with the oil change. All they'll do if you pay for an "oil change," is do the oil/filter change and adjust the tire pressure (per CA law).

Tire rotation is not included. At least not at the dealer for which I quoted the price for (It's $25 extra). Besides, you can't rotate tires on this car anyway.

They check tread depth, brakes, lights, fluid levels, and reset your service indicator light. Done. Isn't it similar to Firestone's "19 point inspection" or Jiffy Lube's Signature Service? They all do it because it's a potential to up-sell you on additional parts and services since. They'd be silly not to do it.

Usually most "courtesy checks" don't involve taking off the tires to inspect brakes and suspension. Techs probably want extra money for that.

But are you sure that MB does it as part of Service A? Anyway, sorry for getting OT here. I did see coupons for $90 oil changes from MB. Not sure what the regular price is for just an oil change.

And that $90 price is actually very reasonable, I'd say. Figure $7/qt for an MB 229.5-spec oil x 9 quarts, so that's $63 already. Add another $15 for an OEM synthetic fleece filter. That leaves you $12 for labor.

The few MB service A descriptions I googled did omit a tire rotation, but explicitly listed the operations of measure brake pad thickness, inspecting the suspension, etc-- all of which are tasks that require taking off the tires. If the dealer charged you extra to rotate the tires (if applicable) when the tires are already off, that is unacceptable.

Zoom in. Bob Tyler Toyota, Pensacola, Florida. Price for six quart 0w20 toytoa part #00279-0WQTE—01 0W20 – Single Quart plus Toyota filter plus inspection for a 3.5LV6 62.05 plus tax. For a Prius, deduct the price for a 6th quart but add tax. Answer: about $60.
[P.S. Good point about staying on topic. My last post about having the dealer change my oil ignited a firestorm. If you look at the receipt carefully, I asked for Mobil 1- 5W30 which is what they did put in the car since I watched them do it ….. cashier explained they just plugged in the wrong code so accidently charged me for a 3.5L 0W20 oil change .

A freiend at work here paid almost $60 for a Chrysler dealership conventional oil change. I guess the 3.5 is over 5 liters so there was an up-charge for that but I don't remember how much.

Canadian Tire is advertising a seasonal service for $39.99, up to 5 liters or QSGB, tire rotation, fluids, grease, battery check. Nothing mentioned about synthetic though.

my dealer charges around $65 for synthetic w/ oem filter. but around $20 for regular. but if i supply the stuff its $12. go figure.

In NYC, after synthetic, filter and labor, the cost of a full synthetic oil change, for a 6 cylinder engine with 5 quarts is anywhere from $65 to $95. But then again....do you really know what your getting for oil changes.

If someone is a consistent 3K to 5K Oil Change customer.....and the establishment knows this from it's records....the customer may be getting Dino oil in the sump since it is changed so frequently.

Unfortunately, how would the customer know? Only through a UOA, would they know for sure.

If the price of motor oil continues on the rise, as it has, these prices for full synthetic Oil changes will be higher.

I would much rather see the price of motor oil higher and a lowering of gasoline prices.
That way the oil companies make their money on motor oil and not hurting motorists at the pump for a fill up.

OK, I was able to confirm that oil/filter change alone runs $90. This does not even include resetting of the service light, LOL!

Toyota of York charges $45.99 for oil change/tire rotation and basic inspections. they use Mobil 1 exclusively.

The best thing to do if you want to run synthetic oil and have someone else do it, is to find a dealer that will allow you to supply the oil and then they just charge you for labor. For a very short period of time about ten years ago, I had to get the dealer to do my oil changes on my 95 Firebird Formula, in order to satisfy the aftermarket powertrain warranty. I found a GM dealer near my house that would change the oil for $15 labor, and I supplied the oil. And for that $15 they included the oil filter too, so it was a pretty good deal at the time.
