I recently bought a 00 Eddie Bauer Edition Expedition with about 78K on the 5.4L engine. The previous owners kept good records in the book of everything they had done to the vehicle.

51,543 synthetic
56,864 swiched back to dino (said the syn used a little oil).
60,000 motorcraft oil and filter and used 10w30
62,290 motorcraft again
65,547 castrol oil and motorcraft filter 10w30.
The 3rd owner didnt keep records but the walmart

sticker on the window says 79,641 to change again.
(now at about 80,600)

The book calls for 5w30 oil and says motorcraft oil and filter.

I am wondering about switching over to full syn like a M1 5w30? I am looking for advice on what I should do. Go full syn? If not prob run dino Castrol unless someone has another recomendation.

I have been reading extensively on the board and cant seem to come upon a good answer.
Thanks in advance!

my 01 tauru consumes less oil using castrol 5w20.prior to the most recent oil change only motorcraft oil and filters were used.walmart discontinued fords line up recently and catrol exceeds in every category for oil standards. this would be a good choice if you travel much on the open road.mobil 1 could be expensive if you didnt have a spare qt. or two and had to make a purchase in the middle of a road trip. I would also suggest you flush or change out all your fluids and filters.good luck

On second thought since you have a 5.4 i would stick to 5w30 for sure.I like semi/syn cause you get the best of 2 worlds.Good luck. The expy is a great truck.

Doesnt matter if you have a spare quart or two or not, as all oils are compatible and you could throw in a quart of dino even if you were running M1.

Motorcraft semi/syn is great for Fords.I use 5w20 in my '99 Vick with over 100k.The dealer charges 25 bucks. But if i'm short on time i'll use Castrol 5w20 or 5w30.It is just a good.I agree change ALL fluids in your truck&use ONLY factory fluids especially for the tramsission. The wrong one for the trans will blow it quick.

Someone i know learned the hard way.

I had a 99 EB 5.4 Expedition and it liked to use a little oil. It was not until I discovered this site that I found that some 5W30s or 10W30s are thinner than others.Once I changed to a thicker 30 weight my problems were solved. I used Mobil 1 and Motorcraft. I found that if I used Mobil 1 5W30( on the thin side) and 1 quart of 5W40 T&Suv the oil would be a little thicker and would not burn any for a 8,000 OCI.

My Expy has seen 10W30 from day one.

Swithched from dino to M1 at around 80K miles, she's got about 120K miles now.

Did two treatments of ARX at 100K, it's spotless inside the valve covers, great compression and she runs like a champ.

Thanks for all the info guys. I went with Castrol 5w30. Got it changed on Sat b4 i took a trip to Pocono to the races.
I feel kind of dumb though b/c after debating on whether to use mobil 1 or a dino I get into the car after the oil change and look at the sticker in the window again. Well i noticed the milage and the 10w30 specs however i didnt even pay attention to what was used before in it... Sure enough Mobil 1 10w30!!! Oops, well next time it gets Mobil 1! Oh well live and learn i guess.
I love my Expy though and want to make sure it runs for a long time to come. Once again thanks and I will keep ya posted! Great community here!

My 99 Nissan Sentra had a front main seal that was leaking with 5/10W-30. I tried Castrol 20W-50 and the leak became un-noticeable. However, I wanted the bad seal replaced so I changed to Castrol 5W-20 to make the leak easy for the dealer's mechanics to locate. That thin oil really poured through that seal with ease. I had the seal replaced. I now run 5/10W-40 in it with no oil loss at all.
