I bought a 2003 bonneville with 75,000 miles on it. The previous owner used full synthetic. Can I go back to dino oil without hurting anything?

Would the answer be the same if someone used a dino/synthetic blend?

You'd be fine switching to dino if you want. It would be the same with switching to synthetic from dino, especially considering that car is still relatively new and with relatively low mileage.

You get to have a free AllData account; the rest of us have to pay $25 a year.

MAXLIFE 10W-30 at 6 quarts with an AC Delco PF52.

You could change without issue, I'm just not sure I see a reason why you would want to, but thats a personal issue.

Sure. Go either way.
The main benefit for using a synthetic in a car like that is longer oil change intervals, or maybe below zero starting flow.

It is perfectly safe. I don't know how to convince you, though.

30 years ago this was a problem.

My wifes jetta has been back in fourth between synthetic and dino and no ill effects so far...im staying with synthetic for now on.

byez, My '92 Mazda has been changed every winter with Mobil1, and every summer with any conventional that's on sale at the time. That's 15 years withot any trouble.

No problem and actually makes a lot of sense in cold climates.

This is just another old myth perpetuated by those who are against synthetic oils who want to scare you out of using it. Its one of the first things you will always hear from the naysayers. I have been hearing it for over 30 yrs. They will never tell you that up until the last 10-15 yrs or so, just about every car leaked oil to some extent. Go walk around a older Walmart parking lot and observe all the oils mess.

On a side note, the local WM SC recently were replacing the catch basins this past summer. Reason, too much oil/coolants was getting into the storm sewers as evidenced by the holding pond. The state made them install special catch basins to trap it. The cart catcher fella I know told me he has seen a lot of fools changing their oil right in the parking lot, some right over the Catch basins. The ones they had on camera were prosecuted.

Think they all ran synthetic?

that's disgusting... i can't believe the extent of some people's disrespect for everything and everyone other than themselves. doing an oil change on the parking lot floor of a walmart, and just letting the oil pour out all over the floor. [censored]... cheap f@cking [censored]. i hate that [censored]!

No, in my experience this is not a myth, with the OLDER syns. I ran syn in 1991 in a subaru with under 30000 miles on it. Never leaked a bit. Saw no mpg improvements and switched back to dino after 2 OCIs. Within a few weeks of going back to dino, the front crank and both cam seals all developed moderate leaks at the same time.

At the time, I had no idea that syn-to-dino could do this, but the leaks were significant enuf that when I had the car in for unrelated service, they changed all of the seals and covered them under warranty.
