I was under that impression as well but it was listed under the approvals and performance levels so

As long as the product meets/exceeds the specification the company can state that it does, but to get the DEXOS logo on the bottle that takes cash.

So you can't really tell which ones are approvals and which ones are just performance levels.

I'd like to give synpower a shot, especially with the low wear numbers i've seen on numerous uoa's, but I don't know if I can bring myself to do it when PP can be had for cheaper

On at least some of Ashland's sheets, they have an asterisk by the performance levels that are actual approvals. See their European formulas for some good examples.
 
5w20 Synpower and MaxLife are both good for dexos 1 (not officially approved by Valvoline claims they performance exceeds dexos 1)
 
Ironically, buster, our NAPA's are having a big sale (by Canadian standards) for their synthetic in the litre bottles, coming in around conventional price per litre. I just about fell over.
