Unless you are running NASCAR, there are far more appropriate ways to gain power then by hoping you might get one or two ponies from your oil choice.
 
Clevy: cost is not an issue for me. Not that I am insanely wealthy, it's just that there aren't any oils that I can justify as "too expensive" for
My vehicles. I can easily justify spending $8-9 dollars per quart for a nice vehicle that I plan on keeping for a long time to come.

Overkill: there have been tests done that clearly show HP increases by switching to higher grade oils. It may be a marginal increase and not the primary benefit I am looking for, but it is an added benefit.

A used oil analysis isn't the be all to end all and it cannot see organic additives,so just because it looks similar to valvoline in no way means it is.

Synerlec is great stuff and I've personally seen track and street pounded engines where the cams looked new,not even a wear scar and that includes countless cold starts with immediate runs.
I've used and like the stuff with synerlec and have some of the older euro blend(with synerlec) in my stash.
Now for a daily driver I don't feel the cost is worth it simply because top shelf syn's from the majors cost less and I don't feel a commonly driven motor requires the overkill. I feel the same about red line lubricant. Absolutely great stuff just not cost effective in a daily driver.
Royal purple makes great products however when compared to less costly alternatives I just can't justify the extra expense in a daily driver.
Race engine,heavy duty working engines,stationary air cooled engines then yes a higher quality speacialy oil would be on my radar however in a modern engine there are less costly alternatives that provide more than enough protection for the engine and lets get serious here. Today's engines last longer than the car it's installed in and when was the last time you saw a vehicle heading to the wrecker because of engine failure.
However if you like the hps stuff lets us know how you like it.


Crocodile tears aside, I'd bet RP has a bunch of boxes behind their distribution center from Ashland Oil.

I'd also suggest the RP at Walmart is a cash cow capitalizing on the Synerlec phenomena in racing and other off-road applications.

It's certainly good oil but nothing jumps out at me from the PQIA analysis except the obvious Valvoline comparison.

Maybe PQIA can start testing for pixie dust.

RP is great oil, yet there are still so many that dismiss it as unicorn tears. Dollar for dollar it's hard to beat the performance you can get out of RP.
 
If you are under warranty: Only use API certified oils, specifically those that meet your vehicle specification. It's a very simple rule of thumb.

I promise there is not a single additive or elixir outside of API certs that will add any performance or longevity to your engine.

There have been controversial dyno tests done by oil manufacturers, looking to sell you oil, to show an increase in power. There was actually a thread recently on Royal Purple's claims regarding that. And Castrol took them to the BBB over those claims (amongst others):

Viscosity, more than anything, will make the difference, and even then, the difference is tiny. That's why when running qualifying, in NASCAR, the run a much thinner oil then what they will run the race on. For that tiny bit of extra power. if they could just swap out the additive package for "Synerlec" and retain the superior protection of the heavier non-qualifying oil, I'm sure they would.

Note that I'm not knocking the quality of the product here; I am sure it performs extremely well. But justifying oil choice based on dubious claims about gains in power, claims that have been contested publicly and on this forum is a bit of a stretch. That's part of the reason RP has such a controversial reputation on here. No different than AMSOIL's use of the 4-ball wear test really, which also doesn't have an overly warm reception.

If Royal Purple's oil can keep wear surfaces in impeccable condition, if it can keep pistons clean, varnish in suspension and last in service, and this can be demonstrated using industry standard repeatable testing protocols, then that's what should be lauded as the benefits of their product IMHO. Far less gimmicky and you won't have your competition taking you to the BBB over them either

As a loyal RP user for decades, and a BITOG member for many years, let me give you some advice. Don't ask about RP here. You will not receive a lot of constructive, useful, or even knowledgeable( i.e. actual use and experience )answers despite this being an "oil" site. Overwhelmingly the vast majority of the naysayers have never used it so they have little to add that is useful or backed up by any real world experience with it. If I am going to trash a product I am going to have some hands on time with it to back up what I say. It amazes me the way people are so sure of themselves when speaking so negatively about a product they have never tried.

Most of the people here that speak negatively about it do so for one of 2 reasons. One is just to try and antagonize people who do use it and the other is because it "cost too much". Some wont use it because it is purple as well which is just ridiculous( who cares what color it is ). They will call it junk, snake oil, unicorn tears, etc... and whine about the color and/or cost. It really gets old. I have repeatedly shown it can be had for very reasonable costs but they will not listen. It just is not worth bringing RP up here because every single thread eventually gets ruined by the infants.

You are much better off when looking for useful and constructive feedback going to automotive forums and asking there. In your case go to the Escape forums and ask your questions about RP in your application there. If you ask here, even when it is a legit and serious question like you asked, the haters and trolls come out in full force trying to stir it up and they ruin the thread. Every single time! RP can not be discussed here without the foolishness you have already seen coming out. It is a shame really.

To answer your original question about using RP HPS in a new vehicle under warranty. Best not to do it even if it wouldn't harm anything( which it wouldn't ). Simply put you need to use an oil that meets the specifications Ford gives you in the owner's manual...

RP HPS while available in 5W20, and most likely meets and/or exceeds the Ford oil spec, is not API Certified and can not be so to the service level required( SN ) and thus wouldn't meet your warranty requirements. It is mainly due to their Synerlec additive which has too much ZDDP in ppm for the API spec. Again, the HPS isn't going to hurt anything( except maybe your catalytic converter if you burn a lot of oil for many thousands of miles )it just doesn't meet all of the requirements you need to have.

The RP API oils however do meet all of your needs and they are very good. I ran the 5W20 in a HEMI Ram and a 2.4L Jeep Patriot and it worked very well( good used oil analysis as well ). While under warranty just stick with the API line. After you are out, if you still have the vehicle, you can try the HPS out.

I have run the RP oil filters since they came out as well. Good choice on your part. Bottom line is you are using an excellent product with the RP API and RP filters. If the cost isn't an issue for you( never was for me either )then keep on keeping on! Don't let the BITOG trolls and anti RP squad, WHO HAVE NEVER EVEN USED IT, talk you out of what you are using and that you are happy with.
 
NHHEMI, thanks for the positive response. I am going to continue to use API until the warranty is up, then switch to HPS or whatever synerlec oil is around in the next 2 years. I'm not completely sold on the RP filters. The first one I used caused ticking in the lifters. I sent it to RP for QA/QI and they sent me a new one (just installed). I still am experiencing an engine tick (this time at the bottom of the motor) so I'm not sure it will stay on there. I used Purolator synthetic between these two filters and that one ticked for about a week then stopped. This motor may just be finicky when it comes to synthetic filters. If the ticking stops, the filter will stay. The build quality of the RP filter is outstanding and there is no denying that!!!

It seems to me that a reliable test has already been produced using a falex machine.
It actually applies the weights in uniformity (unlike the one amsoil represents as the "one armed bandit")
Now there is no place in the engine that is recreated by this test. It is just done to measure lubricity, the topic on hand here

Yet for all the RP hype there is no one that can show real repeatable testing to prove any of the claims associated with it.

Around here we deal in facts, not advertising hype. And the facts say that "ordinary" synthetics like M1 and Pennzoil Platinum / Pennzoil Ultra are giving engines nearly unlimited service life even in demanding duty cycles. Most cost less than RP at ordinary stores.

Like ours. Just sold a truck with half a million miles on it with no problems at all, ran so good it is still working in Michigan today. Oil used? Whatever synthetic was on sale, changed via OLM only...

That's basically my point. There are a host of valid engine tests available, sanctioned by the SAE, for testing engine oils in engines. A good example, in fact a very fresh one is demonstrated here by AMSOIL (I know, surprising given the 4-ball wear stuff):

None of the traditional gimmicky "4 ball wear scar" claims there. They actually used one of the properly sanctioned SAE/ASTM tests and ran it at double the interval.

Now all is not perfect on that page. We still see the 4-ball wear test reference further down, and something about wax in traditional oils, but they do appear to be moving away from their traditional marketing, something also demonstrated by the fact that they are now getting some manufacturer approvals for certain lines of their oils too (like their Euro oils).

As I said earlier, I have no issue with RP's products. I've used their ATF as power steering fluid and it has held up well, quieting the Ford PS whine for example. My issue is with the types of claims made regarding performance using non-standard measures/procedures, which is the same issue BP/Castrol had with them. And they are not alone in making these types of claims, so it isn't a condemnation of RP, it is one of this type of advertising. AMSOIL appears to be headed away from that style of marketing, and I would like to believe RP is too with their move into having properly approved API lubricants for "the masses" that aren't running 500lb valve springs and needing the kind of protection the Synerlec add pack is purported to provide.

That said, Castrol has made some ridiculous marketing claims (remember the Chargers on the dyno?), as have the other majors. I'm simply not a fan of that style of product promotion. Most of us on here aren't. If your product does twice as well on Sequence IVA, then, like it or not, that claim is valid, and, for a short tripped car, may actually be relevant. Same with SOPUS's recent claims regarding piston cleanliness. What was questioned on here was why they only showed one piston, not all of them. That's a bit of marketing sneakery sliding into play there. But the testing methodology was sound, it was how it was presented that people here didn't like.

And yes, there are people on here who hate RP, as NHEMI noted. I like to think I don't present myself as one of those people. I object to ridiculous marketing no matter who is doing it

You can write a thesaurus on why or why not to choose an oil. For me, and I think for a lot of other people, if you change your own oil you want to feel like you're doing something special. Why use what they have at the grease monkey? Use something exotic. I'm going to start using RP with the synerlec in my Mustang.

You and I don't often agree on much but on this I have no problem. So much of this is subjective hype, marketing and other tripe that nobody will ever take the time or spend the money to prove. If oil A makes you feel like you are doing better by your car, then bloody well use it! That's ultimately why I use Mobil 1 0w-40 over the other approved lubricants that are available, I simply like Mobil, as a brand, better than I do Castrol. I can admit that.

The test in the video I posted represents lubricity and its direct affect on metal components. There is no place where these conditions occur in the motor, these conditions demonstrated are much harsher. What do I want my oil to do? Have superior lubricity and decreased engine wear on components. This test (and many others) is valid, whether some choose to acknowledge them or not!

This is where we have an issue. If a test doesn't replicate conditions found in an engine, then how exactly is performance in that test relevant to my engine? The EP tests exist (like the 4-ball wear test) to evaluate the performance of gear oils and greases; conditions in which EP actually happens, making the testing relevant.

It doesn't translate to "superior lubricity", what it translates to is if you put it, and Valvoline conventional in a differential, the RP product is going to hold up a lot better. That's awesome, but not particularly useful.

If the test were relevant, it would be part of one of the standardized oil evaluation sequences or one of the manufacturer testing regiments. It isn't because it isn't. It is a neat little inexpensive test designed to get a "wow" out of people just like the 4-ball wear test. The only way to evaluate an oil's performance in an engine is to test it, in an engine. That's why most of the sequence tests use engines

If RP were to evaluate the product's performance using some K800's on a Lunatti Voodoo or something in an SBC for a specific duration, following a standardized process, then comparing those results to other lubricants, in that application, that, to me, would be a far more useful data point, as flat tappet performance, evaluated using a high stress flat tappet application, is information useful to somebody building an aggressively cammed flat tappet mill. That's the kind of testing myself and others would like to see, as it represents real performance evaluated using conditions actually encountered in the racing world. This kind of testing would be no more expensive than the Sequence IIIG testing that AMSOIL performed that I mentioned earlier. So it certainly isn't an issue of expense IMHO.

That's important when you are laying down your money.

My money, and less of it, will go elsewhere.

NAPA Synthetic is my choice with what looks like API SN RP's same additive package.

It's on sale right now...
 
I thought there was no proven benefit to unicorn tears? Napa uses them too? Must be something to this...

I think you best prove the additive package is the same.

We're talking about a $20 difference here. Holy moly. And you guys don't mind paying for 50/50 antifreeze.
 
I too would like to see evidence of this. And don't get me started on antifreeze, darn Mopar HOAT coolant is not cheap....
