Hi! Ive always used 30 weight in all my yard equipment in the past but i have just purchased a 1997 345 John Deere with the 18hp liquid cooled Kawasaki engine, i was wanting to try somthing different with this one though. I was thinking valvoline synthetic blend(blue Bottle) and a wix or purolator filter. this may seem like a silly question but i just wanted to make sure with you guys. Thanks!

That will work well. Those Kawasakis are pretty tough. That is a nice machine you have there. An even better choice would be:

oops! i probally should have added that, 10w30. Regardless i will be changing the oil and filter often so if there really isnt much advantage i could just stick with valvoline(or rotella?) sae 30.
If you're going with the SAE 30 to get the HDEO additive package without going to a heavier weight, I'd say "OK."
But, with frequent changes, shearing and/or dilution is unlikely to be a concern so nearly any XW-30 would probably be OK.
I certainly wouldn't go with a plain, PCMO 30 weight. They are often more expensive than the multi-vis weights of the same brand ... and for what? They are produced in smaller batches?

I have the same mower and engine, I have been using Mobil 1 5w-40 Turbo Diesel Truck (previously Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40)with good results. I am thinking of switching to the newer Rotella T 15w40 since I can't always find the Mobil 1 in that flavor.

Well i ended up buying a gallon of rotella T 10w30, might be a good alternative?

In the owners manual it says a 10w30 is good from air temps of -4F to about 104F, 10w-40 from -4F to over 122F and 15w40 from 0 to over 122F. Also the oil must be at least SF rated..
