Switching to Motorcraft filter on a Saturn?

I've been doing some research on the Motorcraft filter. From what I have read, it seems to be a good filter for the price. Right now I'm using a Supertech 3614 filter. Would going up into the Motorcraft filter be a better choice? Would the size of filter I need a FL-400s? The car it's going to go on is a 91 Saturn DOHC. Also would going to a bigger filter would be a problem?

Well, the FL400s cross references to the ST 3600, but if the thread size and bypass settings are within specs, then there shouldn't be a problem.

The FL-793 would be the "matching" size to the 3614.
The Fl-400 is about 1.4" longer, but matches the other specs.

I second that. I use the FL-400s on my Tercel which specs a tiny 4967. My Tundra uses the 3614 but once the warranty is up its FL-400s for that too.

If the FL400 fits you might be able to fit a FL1A. My wife's Aerostar ('92) takes a FL400 and I am running the FL-1A on it. The gasket is slightly different diameter though.

I didn't recommend the FL-1A because of several reasons.

1. The Saturns are fairly tight and the FL-1A is a big filter. The 400 is a maybe, the 1 is a probably not.

2. The FL-400S has a silicone ADBV the FL-1A does not.

3. The 400 is already almost twice as big as the stock filter, plus the Motorcraft has more area then some other brands. I don't think it's needed on a 4 quart sump.

If your looking for extended drain I think the silicone ADBV is needed as much as more capacity. The FL400S has both. At some point the filter is just overkill, not many engines clog a stock filter.

Ok, very good reasons. Kind of like why I don't run the FL299 (1.5 inches longer than a FL1A) on the Aerostar (but I do run it in the FL1A spec applications).

I'd probably do the same thing. I think bigger filters are good, but I don't like to sacrifise anything to use them.

the supertech 3600 will fit perfectly on a saturn. i use this one all the time on my saturn.
