Hi everyone. New member here. I resonantly bought a 2004 Pontiac Vibe. The 2003 Vibe I was driving I gave to me wife. The 2003 has almost 200,000 miles on it. The 2004 has 88,900 miles on it. Both Vibes are the base model. I feel the Vibe is the best car I have ever owned. I would like to take as good of care of my new to me 2004 as I can. I would like to change to Mobil 1 High Range oil but I'm not sure what the best way to do this would be. Again this information is for my 2004 Vibe with 88,900 miles on it. Should I let a dealer or oil change place change my car to Mobil 1 High Range and change it again after about 100 miles or should I just change it and drive it until time for my next oil change. When I drive I'm easy on the car, slow starts and coast to a stop. I always let the car warm up for 2 or 3 minutes when I start it up. Thank you for your help. Drive safe my friends.

I'm thinking it would perhaps be best to drain the old oil first.

Nah..... better to pour in the new oil, let it infuse the metal, simmer a bit, then drain the old oil out. You don't want to shock the system.

I read into your post that you know how to change oil.

Go to wal mart and buy a new oil filter and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance you are talking about. Change your oil filter and put in the new filter and oil and drive it for 10000 miles. No need to dump that high quality oil after 100 miles. Your engine will be just fine with a change to that oil.

Happy motoring and

As the others have said, no special voodoo to it. Just do a regular change, with the oil you desire, and run it as you see fit.

What's "Mobil 1 High Range?" Do you mean "High Mileage?"

If so, are you leaking oil? If not, don't use it. If you want to switch to a synthetic fine but you don't need the seal swell additives - yet.

Right, use the Mobil 1 of your choice and run it as normal. Do not change early. IMHO, go greater than 6000 mile. It can handle it!

Just about any/all recommended regular(dino) oils can go 5K-6K mile Oil Change Intervals(OCI's)...So, most synthetics will go much further.

Much for you to learn here at Bobistheoilguy(BITOG)

3000 mile oil/filter changes today, are a waste on regular oil. And downright throwing money away when using synthetic oils.

I think that there are enough Used Oil Analysis(UOA's) to substantiate my comment! ^^^

Why would you give the old banger to your wife and keep the good one for your use?
I've always done just the reverse and I have a twenty five miles commute each way.
How long for a first run M1 HM, if that what you meant?
Doesn't matter and I'd doubt that an 89K Toyota engine needs a high mileage oil.
Were I you, I'd probably do a run of something cheapish, like NAPA syn (currently on sale). Assuming no leaks and no conumption, and you probably won't see either, you could then move on to M1 AFE, or anything else that you might want to use.
Did you really mean M1 EP?
Either way, start with something fairly cheap so that if the engine has leaks or consumtion issues you won't be wasting more costly oils in it.

As others here have mentioned, there is no special steps needed to switch from conventional motor oil to synthetic. Just follow your normal oil change process, but fill with the synthetic motor oil.

From your question, it appears that you have heard a lot of "auto shop" advice, where there are claims that changing from conventional to synthetic takes special care, or shouldn't even be done. None of this is true.

The EP line is guaranteed by mobil for 15000 miles. The regular M1 line for 10000 miles. Why run less unless under warranty and that warranty specifies shorter drains.
5000 mile drains are a thing of the past.

Back when synthetic oil was young on the market, there was a certain company that specialized in selling it (still does), that created this myth of "gotta get all that old Dino oil out of there first" and even sold branded engine flush to help do so.

That company no longer makes that claim. I still have a can. I never got around to using it.

Here is Mobil 1's FAQ.

https://mobiloil.com/en/faq/product-faqs

Read the questions "Do I need to flush my engine before switching to Mobil 1™ Extended Performance synthetic oil?" and "Is it okay to mix conventional motor oil with Mobil 1™ motor oil?"

The thing with 3000 mile oil changes is that they will typically catch an oil burner before it halts. Tis probably save some folks who never think to check the oil level.
