Switched from Royal Purple to Redline

Just drained out Royal purple Max gear and put in Redline MTL. Now I don't have to force it into gear when cold! 05 Nissan Sentra Spec V
 
Redline MTL is some awesome stuff! That`s what I have in my manual transmission right now. Is your Sentra a 5 or 6 speed (like the Z33s)?

Maybe not that odd. The Max gear in 75W-90? Vis is around 21 cSt. MTL is 10.6. Yeah it's cool in Florida, but not that cold.

So yes you went from something too thick to something that is a little thin.
 
So you switched from a gear oil (that is probably either a 75w90, 75w140, or a 85w140) to a synchromesh-type transmission fluid???

Sounds like you had the wrong fluid in the trans to begin with...you should have been using RP SynchroMax, which is the equivalent of the Red Line MTL...

Not to mention from a non-synchromesh fluid to a synchromesh fluid...
 
From what I understand,synchromesh fluid is an ATF substitute for manual transmissions that require an ATF. From what I`vwe learned here on BITOG,here are 3 fluids that ATF spec`d transmissions could use:

RP Synchromax
Redline D4 ATF
Pennzoil Synchromesh

GL4 Gear oil spec`d transmissions typically use:

Redline MT90 (75W90 GL4)
Redline MTL (70W80 GL4)
An OEM like Nissan MTF (75W85 GL4)
Amsoil MTF and MTG (depending on what vis your transmission requires).

If you can,contact unDummy here on this board. He schooled me on manual transmission fluids. He`s very smart and educated when it comes to transmissions.

Actually, both Red Line MTL and Amsoil MTF are synchromesh fluids (as stated on their respective bottle)...their counterparts (MT-90 and MTG, respectively) are the "heavier/thicker" transmission lubes.

Synchromesh fluids are spec'd specifically for certain applications of transmissions, not just a substitute for ATFs...a good portion of the NV-series (New Venture Gear) transmissions used in the automotive industry require a synchromesh fluid, not ATF.

With that said, I've used synchromesh fluids in transfercases calling for ATF with good results...

Exactly. Just don't confuse ease of shifting with it being the proper fluid for the application. It may be too thin to protect properly in the long run.

I wouldn't run Red Line Oil MTL in a SpecV (a car I used to own ... an '03) in Florida. Calgary maybe, but not Florida. I used to use Specialty Formulation's MTL-P and got other SpecVers to try it and we found it to be the best for the application.

I would drain the MTL, add a quart of RLO MT-90 to your transmission and use your slightly used MTL to fill the transmission the rest of the way (strain it through a piece of cloth as you add it). A 50/50 mix of these similar fluids works well.

You might also try Honda MTF in this application ... although the original fluid shears down quickly. Honda MTF II may be more stable. It's very new and I haven't seen a UOA of it yet.

Oh, and ATF and GM/Chrysler/Pennzoil Syncromesh fluids are not the same weight. ATF's are something like 6.5-7.0 cSt with the aforementioned syncromesh fluids coming in around 2.0 points higher.
 
I agree. MTL is too thin for that transmission, especially when considering the climate. You should blend in MT90.

Nissan has a 75w85 that is an easy choice. Honda fluid is too thin here.

A similar blend of Amsoil MTF/MTG can be considered.

Nissan is addressing poor shift quality by switching from 90wts to 85wt gear oils. I wouldn't simply drop down to an 80wt without studying the increase in wear via UOAs.

I doubt that you will harm your transmisison with MTL. It has a robust additive package and quality basestocks. But, I would still want film thickness protection with your southern weather.
Also, thinner oils will run off the gears more quickly not taking away heat. Thicker oils climb better. Be carefull when making drastic visc changes with manual transmissions. Too thick or thin and you will starve your transmission of lubrication flow, cooling flow, load/shock protection........
