GL4 Gear oil spec`d transmissions typically use:
Redline MT90 (75W90 GL4)
Redline MTL (70W80 GL4)
An OEM like Nissan MTF (75W85 GL4)
Amsoil MTF and MTG (depending on what vis your transmission requires).
Actually, both Red Line MTL and Amsoil MTF are synchromesh fluids (as stated on their respective bottle)...their counterparts (MT-90 and MTG, respectively) are the "heavier/thicker" transmission lubes.
Synchromesh fluids are spec'd specifically for certain applications of transmissions, not just a substitute for ATFs...a good portion of the NV-series (New Venture Gear) transmissions used in the automotive industry require a synchromesh fluid, not ATF.
With that said, I've used synchromesh fluids in transfercases calling for ATF with good results...
