I'm happy with my Comcast broadband internet that I pay $42.95/month. But I just got an offer in the mail for AT&T DSL Fastaccess extreme 6.0 Mbps download/512kbps upload for $42.95.

If I sign up, I'll get

$50 cash rebate if you order online
$125 rebate if your a cable internet switcher
Wi-fi Basic at over 20,000 locations--get to surf the internet at wifi hot spots for free including mcdonalds and starbucks
Free DSL modem

What do you guys think? anyone have AT&T DSL?

I have the slow, cheap version. It has been reliable and it works fine for me.

One thing I like is there are no taxes or fees on my bill -- my $25 monthly service really costs just $25.

From the little of Comcast I've used, I liked the speed it offered. The people I work with don't care for the many service interruptions.

However, AT&T DSL has been VERY reliable for me and is easily end-user serviceable with only a few mouse clicks for modem resets.

I have been debating this same switch for some time now and I keep sticking with my Mediacom cable high speed internet provider. I don't know why. The cost per month is outrageous, $60.95.

We do have Verizon DSL service available to us here in the western NC mountains, but I always read that cable was faster than DSL. Verizon DSL is quite a bit cheaper, but I don't want to sacrifice that "blink of an eye" speed of cable broadband.

Can anyone advise if they think I would notice any difference in the high speed between Mediacom cable and Verizon DSL?

I apologize to ToyotaNSaturn for interrupting his thread with my own problem.

Thanks,

Jim

Horrible service from Comcast caused me to switch from their cable to the fastest AT&T DSL. AT&T uptime and customer service has been excellent, with the exception of them just deciding out of the blue to cancel my phone service, and therefore the DSL.

Took me a week and a half to get the DSL restored, not due to a lack of it being deemed a priority problem, but because AT&T initially said there was no way to shortcut the slow progression of an account deletion-undeletion through there system. Finally an astute customer service rep figured that it would be faster to activate me on a new number than to let my old one play out, then restore.

It took me dozens of hours on the phone to get service restored. You never know who you are talking to with AT&T. Apparently despite representing that there are different departments for different functions, all customer reps are one big pool, so there is no elevation process to a more skilled level.

However, I must say the uptime and technical support have been first class. Where Comcast technical reps are obviously in India, script bound, and don't care about your problem, AT&T reps are patient, knowledgeable and friendly (where ever they are located). I'm not fond of the business office, but the tech help is absolutely first rate.

I am very pleased with my AT&T DSL. Started with the $15 intro plan, upgraded to Pro, and now Elite. That costs $35 per month and does everything I need. I learned the hard way I should have gotten the free wireless gateway when I first upgraded. I bought one at Ebay and has made my life easier. Been very stable connection since then and easier then connecting a router (for someone technically challenged like me). My landlord has Charter Cable and she was able to cancel her high speed service and use my internet service. Actually, the Elite DSL I have is just as fast or maybe a little faster then the high speed package she had with Charter. Here is the Elite advertised speed:

How fast was the lowest priced one? (15 bucks)

My wife wants to watch her shows online, and I would like to keep it cheaper if I can....

I watch alot of American tv shows online from China so I'll need enough bandwidth for myself and my wife.

I never thought about DSL as I always heard cable was faster, but this deal they sent me piqued my interest. I didn't see anything about connection charges and I noticed they said "24 month fixed" rates. Has AT &T raised their rates lately? My comcast rates have stayed the same since I got cable internet four years ago.

Looks like it $20 bucks now, unless you get an intro special. Here is the speed.

Not sure it is fast enough for your needs?

Used ATT DSL for a while in colleges, about 10 years ago. Back then it was 1.5/384 for $50 a month with static ip address, and we split 5 ways among roommates and neighbor in college.

Unreliable backbone, you could ping the gateway on the other side of the line, but it won't get out of the ATT internal network (confirmed via trace route).

But that's 10 years ago, so I'm sure they are better now. Using comcast and seems to be down only once the last 3 months.

Yes I've had AT&T DSL and in my experience it stunk. And you'll be hounding them for those "rebates". Others may like it of course, but compared to a cable modem here, well, it just didn't.

It has been very reliable for me, but I think a lot has to do to all the upgrades. In my neighborhood you can get U-Verse for your TV needs so they put a lot of equipment in lately for that newer technology. My landlord literally freaks out if her computer is not working. I did not have her cancel her cable high speed service until I was sure AT&T would be rock solid. The wireless gateway helps. One less thing to troubleshoot if a connection is bad and now AT&T will provide Tech support if needed.

Here's a DSL modem trick when the modem seems slow or not working properly with the Westell modems: go to 192.168.1.254 in your web browser. Choose the reset option on the right. Wait 2 minutes. Far simpler than calling anyone for support. In fact, once I found that one doesn't need the setup CD they give you with the initial setup, I don't even call them for support any longer.

Lastly, DSL modems will reset the connection to the phone switch upstream often during thunderstorms/lightening. Then again, we probably shouldn't be using a computer during a lightning storm, eh?

ToyotaNSaturn,

What kind of download speeds are you getting with AT &T DSL? which package do you got?

A few years ago, my sister got AT & T DSL in Memphis, TN though, they have had no problems, they got a $100 cash back. I should get the rebate though. AT&T hates Comcast. Comcast got into the VOIP phone business and took away customers from AT&T. Now AT&T is getting into the cable business to take cable customers away from Comcast. TNS knows that in TN, Comcast has run promo ads to stop AT&T from building a cable network in our area. In fact, they urged citizens to let our local congressman know about it. They hate each other for sure.

AT&T sold many of their their cable networks to Comcast several years ago. "AT&T Broadband" became Comcast. They had most of the Chicago area, among other places.

As far as service goes, I have Comcast and I can't remember when the last outage was. Since they deployed phone service (which is VOIP but on a private network; the IP never leaves Comcast's network), the service has gotten very reliable.

My option for DSL is Verizon and they stink.

I've been VERY happy with my AT&T DSL no problems at ALL in the
5 years we have it,i have the Pro 1.5meg DL(but it's acually faster)and
it's great, fast,relyable and $25 bucks can't beat it.

i would recomend it to any one.

Where I live, 3Mbps is what's offered, and that was just last year. It was only $2.50/month more to go from 1.5 to 3Mbps.
