SureDrain installation instead of new drain pan

I couldn't find the thread where I said I would try installing the SureDrain with teflon tape instead of using an oversized bolt on my stripped oil pan (just bought a used car a year ago with this problem).

Well I skipped using teflon tape, and used "Hondabond" liquid gasket on the threads, and chose a ribbed nylon washer instead of the copper one supplied with the Fram SureDrain SD-2.

I was able to install it reasonably tight, the threads are zinc/chromate coated steel, much better for dealing with stripped threads than the brass threads of the Fumoto product I installed on my newer cars (that didn't have stripped threads in the oil pan).

So far, no leaks from the sealant nor from the valve. If if holds just fine, I will have saved myself an oil pan replacement, or at a minimum using an oversized bolt.

You definitely did the right thing. Those oversize bolts are trouble in my opinon. I'm not real fond about forcing a self-tapping oversized drain plug into my oil pan. I installed one on my Mustang, and the darn thing leaked even worse afterwards. -Joe

i know a guy who used a hull plug for a boat as a drain pan bolt. you know what a hull plug is, that big rubber thing you turn sideways to make it wider, so it keeps water out of the boat. well he used it for a couple years without problems.
