SuperTech synthetic turning cloudy?

New to the board as a poster, been reading for a long time.

A few months ago when it was still winter here in VA, I noticed a quart of Super Tech 5w30 synthetic (in the clear bottle) on my garage shelf had become very cloudy. Looked a bit closer and there was fluffy, wispy looking stuff suspended in the bottle. I shook it to see what happened, but it was still there.

Now it's warm here, and that quart of Super Tech was still cloudy, although the suspended material wasn't there. I tossed it out, only kept it around to see what happened. My concern is my car, 2001 Bonneville (non-supercharged) w/ the GM 3.8 is still on that fill of Super Tech. I feel I need to change it, but there's only about 3k miles on it.

Cloudy oil? Change it fast, as in yesterday? Thoughts?

Better of sending it in for a VOA (it was un-opened correct?)

I'd hope you atleast disposed of it properly and not just "threw it away" atleast?

Next time I'm at Walmart I'll check the SuperTech bottles. I generally don't keep oil around of my own long enough to see what it looks like hehe.

If the oil is exposed to direct sunlight(due to the clear plastic bottle) I think it was the bottle becoming cloudy. Secondly those suspended materials were probably additive fall out.

Cloudy is often moisture in the oil, but I'm not sure how that would happen in an unopened bottle.

I've noticed that our Ester AC oil turns cloudy below 40 degrees. Once it warms up it goes back to normal.

Could have been the plastic bottle to you were seeing.

That quart bottle didn't see sunlight unless I had the garage door open, it sat on a shelf along the back of the garage. As for disposal, it was poured in with the used oil after an OC in the wife's minivan recently. I don't think it was the bottle being hazy because it looked normal after I poured the oil out.

I'll stick this one in the mental "mystery" file and not worry about it. Walmart has PP at $20 at the moment, and that 'new' Pennzoil conventional with the increased sludge cleaning claims at $12, the bonnie will be getting one of those soon enough. Come to think of it, I believe I saw Mobil 1 0w30 on sale, too, right next to some Mobil 1 Truck and SUV ($15 for that). Decisions, decisions.....

The 3800's in them Bonnies are bullet proof run any good oil and she'll out live you two to one,i've owend many of them.

I bought 2 qts of super tech syn 5 30 about 3 months ago and when i got home i saw white waxy stuff on the bottom of the clear bottles. If i shook it really vigorously for a bit it would start to mix back in, but never fully. The next day it was all there again. Ive since checked the shelves at Walmart and have not seen it since. Eventually used it as a top off in an old burner.

If it is moisture then I'd use it because some plastics are hydroscopic in nature which absorbs moisture from the air. That's if it is some form of moisture. The oils moisture can br driven out by driving it on the freeway getting it nice and hot.

Don't worry - it means he fits in perfectly here!

He can go join the folks who drain synthetics at 2-3k because 'it went through a really hard winter' and those who 'are thinking of going from 3k OCI's to 4k OCI's, but aren't sure.....'
