Old design SuperTech ST16 from a 2016 VW Jetta with the 1.4 TSI engine. 6k on the filer, 30k on the car. Oil was Pennzoil Euro AV 5w30.

I put on a Bosh Distance+ 3422 and Castrol 5w40 oil.

Good eye!

It is the old style cage spacing.

You are very welcome.

I put on a Bosch Distance + D3422 and some Castrol 5w40.

Thanks for posting.

Question: How come SuperTech filters have what looks like two Base Plates ?
The normal thick one I understand, what's with the sheet-metal one ?

Here is a picture of the other side of the end plate. Don't know why they do this, but others have it also.

Very early E-Core filters did not have that thin sheet outer tapping plate cover. Feedback from lube shops is that installers were having problems in remote installations were going by feel trying to thread on the filter, they were difficult to align on the oil filter housing threaded stem. The thin sheet outer tapping plate cover was added to address that.

Photo # 7, just to the left of 12 o'clock, it looks as if some of the media is about to be pushed through/around one of the centre cage ribs. I had a couple of purolators do this. Hard to tell with just pictures on the web. If you cut the media off and stretch it out while holding up to a light you may find some holes.

Is it 8/17/2009?

I vaguely remember reading about that first plate. All I can remember is it had something to do with controlling oil flow.

Why are there extra holes in the threaded plate?
The inboard ring of holes is a portion of the relief valve mechanism. The outboard ring of holes is the
normal oil inlet holes.

Ecore frequently asked questions.

Compared to most of the Fram PH16 filters I've seen, that Ecore doesn't look half bad. Of course, when one can run an XG8A until it practically rusts off the engine for 3 or 4 5K OCIs, there's no reason to use anything else.

FlyingVan - nicely done.

I can honestly say that I have never had an issue with any of the eCores that I have run. (STP S2, Champ Labs PH820 and AC-Delco PF1250).

Thanks for the cut & post.

I used plenty of both the Ecore like this and prior traditional pre-Ecore base end bypass design ST16 oil filters on my 1993 Dodge D150 5.2L and 2001 Dodge 5.7L V8's without any issues observed by me in years past.

Good catch and looking at the ST label and number of longitudinal trusses (4) I was thinking the same thing. Champ date code is a straight forward read for as long as I've seen them, therefore this one made 08/17//2009. Previous Champ made ST line.

Pleat spacing on this looks pretty good which as noted was not true of many older ecores. Combined with the wider cage openings, why some blow outs seen. Champ has added more longitudinal trusses to the cage, I believe this one would have at least 6 now. Axial trusses 'may' be greater in number too. Hoot already explained reason for auxiliary base/tapping plate.

Beyond that weakest point imo is the nitrile combo valve used for bypass. That said, used for ~5k mile ocis 'likely' ok. Thanks for c&p.
