SuperTech Filters...Your Thoughts?

I have measured and found Purolator and ST about the same, both 2/3 the filter area of a PF 1177. I haven't seen any difference in oil pressure on my truck with any of the 3. I am using ST now because the AC's are hard to find and Purolator more expensive for what looks much the same.

It never ceases to amaze me that people will find ways to justify spending $20-$50,000 on new vehicles yet seek out the cheapest oil and filters, then try to convince themselves (and others) they made the right choice based solely on saving a $.

I always question why something is so cheap? e.g. Supertech Oil Filters. And it is usually because it is made to meet the minimum standards, not the highest standards.

There is no such thing as cheap quality....

Don't know, and I'm not saying that this would happen in every application... just relating my experience with them.

Perhaps it has something to do with GM locating the filter bypass valves in the engine rather than relying on one built into the filter.

I looked at a few of the Super Tech filters this week an I was not that impressed. They seem very light, similar to the non-heavy duty STP filters. WalMart probably realized they could save $.000246 each if they cut the amount of filter media in half.

Until I take one apart and look inside, I think I'll go with somethign else. Trying to save a $1 on a filter doesn't make much sense to me after spending $25 on synthetic oil...

That I can believe from what I saw last week. STP has a more heavy duty varient of at least one of their filters though - the large Ford type. It's noticable how much heavier it is just from a quick inspection. Maybe the increased case thickness is the only thing?

FWIW,

They flame the Bosch and Champion labs filters here:

"What Not To Use: Bosch, STP, and Wal-Mart Supertech
While both the STP and the Bosch filters were at one point good filters, they are now manufactured off shore of sub-standard parts."

I guess that "Product of USA" printed on the case was lost on them.

Either that or the prodution was moved offshore at some point, then moved back. Not impossible I guess...

Champion has a plant in Mexico that makes certain models of their filters, SuperTech and Bosch included. Other models are made at their plants in the US, including the one right here in my own state.

Mike......I don't necessarily agree with you. I don't believe that a product that costs more, is necessarily better. Is a Fram TG at 6 bucks, better than a wix at 4.50? Is GIII castrol syntec at 5 bucks, better than schaeffer's supreme at 3? In general, a higher quality product will cost more, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Perhaps supertech is an exception. I have never used a Super Tech filter on my own vehicles, but I have used them on the vehicles of others with no problems.

Anyone can comment or flame a filter. But, unless they can prove something, its just hearsay like most oil filter reviews online.

There are a lot of things at Walmart cheaper than anywhere else. I bet that their buyers do a lot of arm twisting.

Steve_RI, try the more common ST3600 in place of the 2827.
SBC350gearhead, don't rule out a defective filter, improper oversized selection, or the oil chosen.
Forkman, where's the oil pressure sender?

Champion says the ST and STP are the same. But I've seen the ST made in Mexico and STP made in USA, and vice versa. Supply and demand and whichever plant is currently tooled for a part number probably gets to run with it. Most of the more premium filters(M1,Bosch,KN) seemed to made here. I wonder why

undummy.....I changed the oil in the camry on saturday. I replaced the filter with a standard size wix, and the valvetrain noise at startup stopped. I suppose there could have been a defect with the oversized filter that I previously used.

The oil is mobil 1 5w30.

I think super tech oil filters are junk. Never seen one that the anti drain back valve worked properly. Want to get weird looks at the store? Put that filter up to your mouth and suck to see how easily the ADV releases, then blow to see if it seals properly. Have not found a ST yet that seals when u blow. All other consumer brand {PUR, Fram, WIX, Motrocraft .ect} seal and let no air pass......
I will just keep spending that extra $1 for a WIX or Purolator thanks.......

Hardly a scientific test. Anyways, I'll leave that distinction to you.

Who knows, maybe you'll get a shot on Letterman some night.

Acouple of members of my nissaninfitniclub cut open some filters and found even teh (decent ) putolator does not look as good internally as the OEM filter ( in this case 55Y00, 60U00 is an even better OEM filter sadly discontinued but you can still find tme especially at smaller Nissan/infitrni dealers)

I have found AC's better than Purolator, and a tiny Mazda filter surprisingly good. I would at least go with the OEM over the lower priced third party filters.

In my own personal opinion, yes they are at least built better than FRAM. Picking them up I can tell the ST is heavier, and overall just constructed better. For my 6 month changes they work fine (I drive about 3K in 6 months).

Now as for filtering, startup nosie, ect I can't comment on because I've never done a used oil analysis or experienced a problem with startup noise/knock with any filter.

Certain seals need to be wet to work properly. Fill the filter with oil and do your best blow/suck test.

So, SBC, what were the PNs? Just wondering what the specs were for the standard vs. oversized that you had problems with on the camry.
