Supertech 4967 & 7317 have changed

Just wanted to let you Walmart Supertech oil filters fans know that these particular filters mentioned above have changed. They are half the weight as before and have redesigned holes on the bottom. They also have a blue plastic cap at the far end of the filter, attached to the bypass valve. HOWEVER! I did not notice a plastic center tube. The center tube looked to be metal.

Any ideas?

I know it was posted a while back that they were putting new bottoms on the filters to make them easier to center on the filter mount, but not sure on the blue cap?

I posted on this a while back--the blue cap is a new plastic bypass valve similar to Fram's design. Previously the coil spring assembly for the bypass valve was visibly protruding into the center tube, now it's on the oustide so all you see is the blue plastic valve. The design is new to Champion but has been used by Fram for many years.

I looked inside an STP filter last night at AZ and saw the blue cap you are talking about...looks pretty cheesy....are these filters made by Champion also? Made in Mexico stamped on top

Goose, the STP filters are Champion made (as are Bosch).

That is the reason I don't use ST brand. This week one supplier and a different one next week and the same for oil. I have no doubt that ST is OK stuff and probably very good MOST of the time.

Eddie, Super Tech filters have been made by Champion for quite a long time.

I will be cutting up an ST7317 in approximately 3 to 4 weeks. It is as described. Stamped made in mexico, metal center tube, and the blue thing on the inside. Never gonna use one of these again as the purolator are stamped "Made in the Usa"

I have great pride in supporting the American worker, as I am one myself. If you have concerns on the supertech I can post pics when I cut it up. If not just buy the purolator and sleep in peace.

Eddie, you are wrong on both accounts. They have 2 suppliers for oil, Exxon or WPP depending on where you live, sometimes both, and Champ filters. ST didn't change suppliers, did you even read the posts or did you just feel like bashing? Champion changed their design.

Champ built and runs their own plant in Mexico. They didn't buy some Mexican company.

Their plant manager transferred from Illinois to run the plant there. It is ISO registered as are the plants in the USA. With their own Quality control lab and testing facilities

The production lines themselves are "new" modern equipment. ( relatively as the plant is 5 years old or so.)

The majority of the production stays in Mexico or goes to Central and South America. Less than 20% is allowed back inside the USA per contract with the Mexican government.

So only certain part numbers will be built there. Some of those may change over time as production is shifted back and forth between Illinois and Mexico on a part number by part number basis.

ChampLabs makes very good, low cost filters and if you want 'the best'....buy a ChampLabs made Mobil 1 or K&N oil filter.
