The new tundra came out last year, it will probably be another 2.5 years before the next generation comes out, and it will probably have a diesel engine as an option.

Toyota Cuts Tundra Production
 
The toy trucks are cute, that's nice... Thanks Toyota.

Trucks are found at home on the construction site, in the barn yard, and out in the field. The first responsibility of a truck is to be a truck, not a 'go fast' toy.

Toyota needs to figure out who they want to be first. They have a little issue with a lack of history in building trucks for this market. GM, Dodge and Ford don't have that problem. Toyota also has a little problem with the fact that they don't have a complete line up yet, which again, isn't a problem with the big 3.

So, what do they do? They build this? How about getting the basics figured out first. They appear to be putting a priority in building what will very likely be a limited production model that will appeal to a miniscule fraction of the truck market, before taking care of the basics first?

Sure. Ford had the Lightning. But they first had a complete line up of trucks, and well over a half century of experience in trucks first. Toyota has what... 2 years now? Where are Toyota's Heavy duty models? What about a diesel? A dually model maybe? Where's the beef? But they're building a 'fast' truck. What a waste.

Sorry, but Toyota really has their priorities screwed up on this. A stupid move from a company that seems to be slipping up an awful lot as of late.
 
More like a horsepower war to win buyers who want the baddest truck around, of which I imagine there are quite a few. Can't blame the manufacturer when buyers will pay for it. I admit I miss the days when a good efficient four-cylinder or a small V6 was all the truck most people felt they needed. Gas was a fraction the price then, too.

"Quite a few", when compared to the overall "meat and potatoes" truck market equals a miniscule fraction of the market.
 
I guarantee that truck will sell, even at the projected gas prices. Gas mileage will barely suffer with the blower unless you're getting into boost all the time. If they would've gone with a 500 cube motor instead of the supercharged route I could understand the negativity toward it a little more.

People posting here do not understand what it is at all.

TRD(performance division) is offering a factory sanctioned bolt on kit for their stock Tundra truck NOT a special model. IMHO it is brilliance by Toyota for those Tundra buyers seeking a high powered truck. Toyota is not building anything new but the kit itself which a dealer installs when brand new and the truck retains its power train warranty.

GM, Ford, Dodge would likely come up with a model for this that would likely sit on dealer lots forever collecting dust and have to be incentized to be sold off. Toyota an optional kit.

btw I am not a truck fan and like all the offering but never would buy one.
 
Toyota offered a TRD branded dealer-installed supercharger for the Camry. How many of those do you see around? How many people do you know own one? Take that number and divide by whatever multiple you want, that's how many supercharged Tundras you will see on the road. Nothing but a nice profit maker for your local dealer.

That remains to be seen. Im not sure what some of you have against a high powered truck. If you drive it normal, gas mileage is going to be within a few percent of the non-supercharged motor. The only way it will lose mileage is from spinning the freewheeling blower during normal driving. This would be the equivilent of driving with the AC on. If you drive like an idiot all the time, you have the potential to get worse gas mileage of course.

TRD has offered a number of superchargers for various Toyotas over the years. IIRC, they made them for 3.4L trucks for a while. It isn't too surprising to see them come out with one for Toyota's biggest V8 yet.

I think they will be able to sell a good number of these. People who can afford a loaded 5.7L Tundra probably don't feel the impact of $3.40/gal gas that much unless they do a ton of driving.

That IS the problem.

It is ALL about THEM.

The lack of fuel is not going to help prices go down.

BECAUSE of them, people who NEED to get to work have to pay more $$ so they can have their over powered truck.

The stock Tundra (I drive one quite a bit at work) has plenty of power. And we have all sorts of goodies in ours to weigh it down.

Also, $3.40 a gallon will be just a memory. (Sad to say... I remember 19.6 cents a gallon for gas)

I remember odd/even for buying gas when it shot up to 60 cents a gallon. And you could only get 20 gallons at a time after waiting in line for fuel.

Good times in the 70s.

Well they are selling them at a healthy rate so some one must like them. As tot he TRD option for the super charger it is not like the lots are going to full of these they are going to be low volume I am sure. Luckily for us this is AMerica and if you can afford it you can have it. THe last theing we need is for the economy to move away from being market driven to legislative engine displacement mandates and such like our European cousins have!

You're right in my case, I did not understand it was an aftermarket add-on being discussed. Toyota has been offering factory aftermarket superchargers for a long time. Add-ons notwithstanding, the Toyota V8s in general are increasingly overpowered gas-hogging behemoths and although I don't begrudge anybody the right to drive what they want, I still think as a matter of personal opinion that a little more restraint among buyers would be desirable.
