Super Tech

Hello and long time lurker and first time poster here. I was wondering, should I use Super Tech 5w30 in my new to me 11' Silverado regular cab 4wd truck or Pennzoil Conventional or Mobil Super?


truck will be driven highway miles 30 miles each way to and from work and little miles on the weekend.

With your driving pattern, any of those would be good choices. If it were me, I'd probably use Pennzoil conventional.

Forgot to say that the truck currently has 30k miles on it, and so far I have been using Pennzoil Conventional in it. Noticed that the Super Tech oil is like $12.68 where I am.

What does the manual require? I'm sure it's 5w30, but does it require the old GM numbered specification, or does it call for dexos1? If it calls for dexos1, you're stuck with one of the dexos1 certified oils. Otherwise, if it's GM's numbered specification, then Super Tech would do if it's so certified, and I suspect it probably is, but I don't have a US bottle in front of me.

Hi Garak, and my oil cap says just 5W30 oil. My co worker bought a 11' Sierra ext cab 4wd truck and his oil cap says Dexos1. Think I will go with the Super Tech 5w30 as read some great/good used oil analysis on it here.

Oldcowboy, I was going to stick with the Pennzoil conventional but around me the wal mart and other places, Pennzoil conventional keeps going up in price. I have heard good stuff and saw good used oil analysis on the Super Tech oil so far.

Look at K-Mart for 1 gallon jugs, there on sale for $4.00 each, scan the bottle for the price.. Pennzoil Conventional, Valvoline conventional and Castrol GTX

The K-MART near me, they are all out of the 1 gal jugs, they have the 5.1 something jugs though, just not on sale. Thanks for the info Fxrider.

You could also go with Coastal. It also has the Dexos certification if you can't find the others readily available. If it's Dexos.....it's been approved.

However, it only comes in the 55 Gallon Drum at the moment. Most likely it's used by the GM Dealerships....since it's cheap bulk oil and Dexos approved. IMO....a very good deal if you can get a couple of 5 quart jugs filled at the dealership.

No problem. Check the manual to be sure, though. It probably calls for SM/GF-4 or better, along with GM's numbered specification. Again, though, I know the Super Tech meets the SM/GF-4 or better (what you have is probably SN/GF-5), and likely meets the old GM numbered specification (just about every reputable oil does). Aside from that, the Super Tech is good oil, and I'd certainly use it with confidence. Heck, I just might some time, because they sell it in the 5 gallon pails that I like.

Thanks garak, and looking at the jug at Walmart, it was the SN rated 5w30. Here in the states I hear its WPP which is decent stuff. In Canada, I believe it is Safety Kleen, correct? Cousin that works for rental place in Detroit says they use Safety Kleen in their fleet without issue. Here in the states you can get super tech 15w40, SAE 30 and indust. stuff in I think a 2.5 gal jug.

It very well might be. If it is, I'd have no problem with using it, either. We don't get the 2.5 gallon jugs up here, except in Rotella - at least that's all I've seen. Not all of our Walmarts seem to have the 5w30 in 5 gallon pails either, but where they are available, they're rather attractively priced.

Yeah, Garak, when out doin shopping for the new nephew of mine; I did see rotella in the 2.5 gal jugs. Down here in the states, they dont have any Super Tech stuff in 5gal pails other than "tractor fluid" or hyd fluid. Reading here on voa and used oil analysis, Canada's Super Tech oil was and dont know if it still is Safety Kleen. Any members here in CANADA know if its still Safety Kleen??

AutoZone has 5 quarts Peak oil & filter for $9.99 with a small mail in rebate . pretty good deal, i have run peak in my 03 2500HD silverado with the 6.0 V-8 and it liked it.. ran it for 4000 mile changes. could have gone further..Super tech is about the same..

Here are the latest PDS for Super Tech 10w30 and 10W-40 from WPP.They should be similar for 5w30.

These oils are almost identical to Mag1 oils,WPP's own brand.The low pour point makes you wonder if these oils have some synthetic base oil added to them.

I just bought 5 quarts of Supertech 10w30 Full Synthetic.
Darth Vader shaped bottle. Gray in color. Can anyone tell me where this oil came from (manufacturer)?

Look on the bottom of the jug,if it has WPP or WNE,it is a Warren Performance Product.

There are no ink markings on the bottom.

In the molded plastic I see 20A1597 on one side and 1-03 on the other with an HDPE logo.

The WPP/WNE is usually embossed in the plastic on the bottom of their jugs/bottles.

A pic of the jug could help.
