Super-Tech synthetic

I want to let you know that, so far, I am very pleased with Wal Mart's Super-Tech 10-30 synthetic oil and their Champion Labs oil filter in my 1993 Mercury Cougar 5.0 V8 with 38,000 miles. The engine seems to run smoother and this is backed up by close to a 5% increase in fuel mileage.(I have a digital dash).

I saw a guy who was also picking up their filters and 5w30 synthetic for his Corvette and he is also quite satisfied with super-Tech.

I run canadas Wal-Mart synthetic right now and I am very pleased aswel for the price.

Canada's super tech is made by Safety-Kleen
America has theirs made by Warren Distribution.

I just went back thru several SuperTech used oil analysis in the BITOG UOA section. Looked at five or six. All were for OCIs 6k or less. Wear readings were excellent - I think each one was stated at below average wear. And here's a quote on one of the used oil analysis from Blackstone -

"Wal-Mart's SuperTech oil works about as good as any of them..."

If someone can show used oil analysis where SuperTech is subpar - plse provide some evidence.

Every Supertech Syn review ( I looked back as far as the search would let me) I have read has been very positive provided the user keeps the OCI reasonable. I would be very confident running Supertech Syn in a Corvette/GTO, especially the LS2 which is an oil burner and would be seeing a fresh quart every ~600mi.

Its the same for Canada's 'Tech 2000' syn for used oil analysis - wear is really good, but product is only good to about 5-7k miles:

i was talking about the additive package. i know the wear #'s are ok. from what i have seen the additive package isnt near as good as most. please correct me if i am wrong fellas

If the performance and wear numbers are good, what else matters? Are the wear numbers going to be better if the additive package was different? Look at the end result!

Mike, it appears to be designed for the 7.5k or less OCI market (and from the used oil analysis it's apparently designed very well). I saw one UOA in the 7k range and the TBN was 1.5 -still good but I wouldn't want to push it on to 10k.

i know but stuff like moly, calcium and etc is what i was talking about.. personally i dont care and i MAY run this stuff out to 5k miles but i doubt it.. werent people complaining about consumption going up also? just trying to learn too fellas

Not sure about consumption - I was just looking at the UOA numbers and the lab comments. I'm interested in knowing the ins-n-outs of Wally ST (in a contrarian sort of way) - so I'll likey go back and peruse several UOA reports and the users comments - see what's up. May be a while before I get to that bit of investigation though - but plan to.

UOA of these oils:
Tech 2000 syn
256 moly
42 boron
1800 calcium
900 zinc
670 phos
Mobil 1
81 moly
40 boron
2100 calcium
666 phos
740 zinc

That tech2000 really looks depleted..

wow, i think i'm gonna throw this stuff in my mom's 2.5 duratec cougar. i gave it Mobil 1 when i first got it, then switched it over to canadian tire brand formula 1 synthetic. i think this is the choice for the next OC... which is already overdue.

Everyday price of $3 is good everyday...but too many good sale/rebate deals on other GrpIII.

I would consider TropArtic blend (Conaco) at $1.68 the real deal at WM. Very limited weights. I would generally run a blend OCI half way between a conventional and full synthetic.

If I was spending $3/qt on ST why not grab some PP at 5qt everyday pricing.

Why PP over ST? Even if they were the same price, why are you choosing PP?

Super Tech is probably OK, but to make a blanket staement that it is all the same isn't correct. In my stash I have Super Tech syn from WPP, AND Super Tech syn from SOPUS. Midwest gets WPP, East coast gets both WPP and SOPUS flavors, depending upon shipping warehouse. That being said, I like both, and have no complaints on either as long as the OCI is reasonable. PP over Super Tech? Probably if cost is not a factor, and proven, consistant good performance is considered. It would be interesting to see a direct comparison of the SOPUS flavor of Super Tech, and PP in a VOA shootout to see if there is a similarity.
