Hey guys, has any one used the Super Tech High Mileage 10w30 oil? Is it any good? Does anyone know what kind of add pack it has? The HM in my area seems to be made by WPP,the bottles are made like the other ST bottles and they are WPP.
I have a 1993 Ram truck with almost 156K and it is using oil,may be an intake plenum gasket but not sure, some days it does ok with oil and some days it will use about half a quart.Would this be a good oil to use?
Thanks

Its probably gunked up rings or bad valve seals causing the burning or a bad PCV valve. High Mileage oil will help swell some seals and clean out some gunk. Worth a shot.

Its not the PVC,checked it.I havent had the truck long, only had one oil change since getting it and that was almost 3K ago.It had an Super Tech filter on it,one of the old ones with the metal center tube so it probably had not had an oil change for a while. It makes very little if any smoke and I havent really seen any leaks,I had a idler arm put on recently and there is very little if any leaks,I looked while it was on the lift.I was just thinking if the Super Tech High Mileage is any good.

Maybe stuck rings. Mine doesn't smoke or leak but I burn about a quart every 2,000 km. In my case it seems to be related to speed: if I drive just city, where I'm doing 70 km/h max, I don't burn a drop. But after a highway run (at speeds of 100-120 km/h) I burn a measurable amount of oil. The culprit here seems to be sticky piston rings (PCV valve was replaced with no effect on consumption).

I'm not familiar with ST High Mileage, although I do like their generic 5W30. Best characteristics I would look for are a higher cSt @ 100C (for a slightly thicker oil within your recommended grade), high flash and low NOACK (making it more resistant to burn off), and either a healthy dose of moly or boron (for wear resistance) combined with a good dose of calcium for cleaning. Zinc and Phosphorous scores are close on any API SM GF-4 oil as the range is pretty narrow for these to meet the spec.

Unfortunately this info is hard to find on the High Mileage oils in my experience, but YMMV. I like the regular Supertech because those numbers are readily attainable, and it has the highest amount of zinc and phosphorous they can add, while still staying within spec, plus a low NOACK (for dino), lots of calcium, low sulphur, and a fairly generous dose of Moly. Its great bang for the buck, and if their High Mileage is at all similar, it should be too.

Supertech engine oil is pretty darn good when analyzed.
I can only imagine their HM version is exactly that, with better additives for wear and seals.

+1 I used to look down on SuperTech oil for a long time. A lot of the VOA's Ive seen on it havent been too good. Took me forever to find the real numbers and I was impressed. I will continue to use their oil anyday of the week. You can trust all oils from WPP.

+2

Seems to do pretty well for a co worker's Ford...

ST High Mileage seems to be aimed squarely at Valvoline MaxLife market based on the bottle design, etc. I wonder if the add pack is comparable?

Ive never been impressed with Valvoline's numbers for any of their oils. Especially Synpower when you pay $25 for that 5qt. If anything ST should pwn their Maxlife oil. ST is truely underrated.

Please remember that SuperTech can be either WPP or XOM, depending on the bottle. Mid-west has XOM with Syntec-looking bottles; saw some in Upstate NY with old-fashioned WPP design.

Apparently, ine is GREAT (XOM) and one is strictly average (WPP.)

Still should be good enough for 80% of cars on the road though, yes?

btw, MaxLife 5w30 and 10w30 at least in Full Synthetic but more like all of them (Blend included) have some pertty good Product Data Sheets. Someone does not like Valvoline.

Valvoline has won many awards for its maxlife and spawned an entire industry of imitators, literally.

Care to back that up with ANY facts? Especially Maxlife? If anything, Maxlife has one of the best additive packages of any OTC oil.

Look at the stats on this WPP dino SuperTech oil. And not some blackstone numbers either, little bit more legit.

Heres a look at some real numbers behind Valvoline's dino too.

+1 This is what I was referring to, MaxLife. Perhaps their best, and a [censored] good Oil.

Maxlife. I just dont understand the point. Synthetic blends just boggle my mind. Why would a company waste their time selling an oil thats just partially synthetic. Will it make a difference? Not really. Its like mid-grade gasoline, nobody buys it and nobody understands why it exists, it just there. I could easily buy my own oils and blend them together and have better results than Maxlife or any synthetic blends. For the price of Maxlife I can buy SuperTech's synthetic, heck I can get that oil for nearly the price of their dino! So [censored] is the point of these blended oils?!?!??!?!? If your thinking of going synthetic dont just beat around the bush and try blended oil, just go get a jug of actual synthetic!!!

Didn't want to take a stab at the fact Maxlife uses (well, ALL Valvoline oils) use Lubrizol's new long life ZDP additive, 2,000 ppm calcium, 300 ppm moly, and 490 ppm sodium? aka, one of the best additive packages made for any oil (judging purely on the numbers)?

I think that hits the nail right on the head. Just because something is synthetic at a similar price doesn't mean it's better for each and every application. If someone wants or "needs" a certain additive pack, there are options other than a so-called pure synthetic.

As an aside, how many oils would actually qualify as a "pure synthetic" if we were really picky about carrier oil content?

Don't get mew wrong, I'm a fan of Valvoline but your statement(numbers)is not entirely accurate with respect to Valvoline conventional: http://www.pqiamerica.com/testresults3a.html
