508,000 and it passes smog test in CA ?? I would love to see a pic of that Mileage.. I had an Olds Custom Cruiser we used at the shop that had a little over 400,000 miles on it but the odometer only went to 99,999 and then went back to zero.. I kept good records so i know that is what it had.

The last few years have been the Super Tech 20w-50 at 3000 to 5000 change intervals.

Do you guys think im harming the old mill and does the ST have the Zinc that my motor needs?

Using a 20w50 is a bit hard on the battery and starter during cold starts. Not sure what the OEM oil specs are, but if they list 40 grades, when considering the high mileage, using a 50 makes sense.
I would consider using Mobil 10w60 EL (It's only just into the 60 range):

It's too late to draw back to 10W-40 -- the engine is all stretched out from 20W-50.
If you go and put 10W-40 in there, you'll have a massive drop in oil pressure.

In all fairness, I am taking the second sentence to mean the Jeep has only been on 20w50 the last few years.. so no, 20w50 didn't get the Jeep this far.

The American side of me says that is too thick, but I am sure Australians do it all the time in hot climates.

I would personally run a 10/15w40 though. Zinc isn't necessary, but the 4.0 does seem to love it. A diesel oil will be loaded with it.

Ain't that the truth!!!

I'd love to see inside that engine. My 97 4.0 is only a baby at 190k. I've been using M1 HM 10-30, but just picked up some quaker state defy 10-30 from wally world. Maybe I need to switch to Castrol 20-50...

The thin oil crowd will say that if you had only used 0W-20 for 500,000 miles, you would have saved enough on gas to buy a new engine.

+1. I don't get why BITOGers generally speaking love thin oil.

If it was mine I would have likely have used ST 15W40 which has a higher TBN (allows longer oci) and ZDDP (even though it likely doesn't need it) with 6,000 mi oci.

With 500,000 mi at this point I would stick with what got me there. If that's ST 20W50, orange can filter and 4000 mi oci I wouldn't change it. After all what I would have done pales in the face of what you have done.

I'm taking the first and second sentence combined to mean 300,000+ miles on Castrol GTX 20W50 and ST 20W50.

Thinnest I ever ran in mine was some SM PU 5w30. Even in summer, I am using up some vintage QS "supreme" SAE 30&40 stuff

Its slowly changing. 5+ years ago, some here felt they had achieved some sort of intellectual superiority by falling in line with the government CAFE speced thin oils. The "Thinner is ALWAYS better" premise has been vigorously debunked here lately. Of course thinner IS better in the frozen north US and for most of our Canadian friends, but it does not extrapolate to the southern tier, where 60 is "cold".

BTW, just returned from Miami. Spent one day in Little Havana. The Ball and Chain was freakin' awesome!
